Biography

Short Description

Saint Rembert, also known as Rimbert, was a ninth-century Benedictine monk, missionary, and archbishop of the dual see of Hamburg-Bremen. He is remembered above all as the disciple and successor of Saint Ansgar, the so-called Apostle of the North, and as the author of the Vita Ansgari, the principal contemporary narrative of Ansgar’s life and of the first organized Latin missions to Denmark and Sweden. Surviving sources do not record a precise year or place of birth, nor the names of his parents. He was born in Flanders in the first half of the ninth century and became a monk at the monastery of Turholt (present-day Torhout in Belgium), a house closely connected with Ansgar’s circle. There he became Ansgar’s pupil and later his companion on journeys connected with the Scandinavian missions.

After Ansgar’s death in 865, Rembert was chosen to succeed him as archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen; the election was confirmed by Pope Nicholas I. Hamburg itself had been devastated by a Viking raid in 845, and the archbishops thereafter resided chiefly at Bremen, which had been united with the Hamburg see. Rembert inherited a fragile charge. Carolingian political authority in the north was weakening, Viking attacks continued, and the missions in Denmark and Sweden remained precarious. He nevertheless continued Ansgar’s combination of preaching and diplomacy, sending clergy into Scandinavia and maintaining contacts with northern rulers. Lasting conversion of the Scandinavian kingdoms did not occur in his lifetime, but a Christian presence was kept alive in some trading centers and courts.

Rembert’s enduring written work is the Vita Ansgari, composed after he became archbishop and based on Ansgar’s own recollections, on documents, and on Rembert’s personal knowledge. It remains the fundamental narrative source for the ninth-century northern missions. He is also associated with a shorter life of Saint Willehad, the Anglo-Saxon missionary who had been the first bishop of Bremen. As diocesan bishop he sought to restore churches and property after the disasters of the mid-century and to defend the metropolitan claims of Hamburg-Bremen over the northern churches.

He died on 11 June 888 after more than two decades as archbishop and was buried at Bremen. Local veneration followed. The Roman Martyrology lists his feast on 4 February; some regional calendars have also observed 11 June, the date of his death. No later medieval papal bull of canonization is known; his cult belongs to the older pattern of episcopal and popular recognition. Contemporary evidence does not record a marriage or children; as a Benedictine monk and bishop he lived under the discipline of celibacy. Specific later patronages attached to his name are not securely documented in the principal historical sources, and many details of his early life remain unknown.
