Biography

Short Description

Remigius of Lyon (also known as Rémi or Remi of Lyon) was a ninth-century Frankish churchman who served as Archbishop of Lyon from 852 until his death in 875. He succeeded Archbishop Amolo (Amulon) in that metropolitan see, which claimed an ancient primacy among the churches of Gaul. Almost nothing reliable is known of his early life, family, education, or place of birth; the surviving notices take up his career only after he had become a leading figure in the Carolingian church. Lyon in his lifetime lay in the shifting political landscape of the middle and later Carolingian kingdoms. His episcopate therefore spanned a period of partitioned Frankish rule and, after the Treaty of Meerssen in 870, the firmer attachment of the Lyonnais to the West Frankish realm of Charles the Bald.

Remigius is best remembered for the prominent part he played in the predestination controversy that divided Carolingian theologians in the 850s. He stood with those who defended a strongly Augustinian doctrine of grace and predestination, a position associated with the monk Gottschalk of Orbais and opposed by Hincmar of Reims and by the four chapters adopted at the Council of Quierzy in 853. Under Remigius’s influence the Council of Valence in 855 rejected those chapters and issued canons on grace, predestination, and free will. The Valence canons asserted a form of double predestination while still condemning any suggestion that God is the author of sin, and they also spoke severely of the treatise on predestination composed by John Scotus Eriugena at Hincmar’s request. Related decisions followed at later gatherings, including the Council of Langres and the Council of Savonnières in 859, in which the Lyonnais position continued to be represented. These synods did not end the dispute, but they made Remigius one of the principal episcopal voices of the Augustinian party in the Frankish church.

Beyond the predestination debates, Remigius worked to restore ecclesiastical discipline and to revive monastic life in his diocese. He is credited with the restoration of the ancient abbey of L'Île-Barbe (Insula Barbara) on an island in the Saône near Lyon, a house that had suffered in earlier decades. As metropolitan of a see that regarded itself as primate of the Gauls, he took part in the wider conciliar and political life of the Frankish church during a period of external pressure, internal Carolingian conflict, and contested ecclesiastical jurisdictions. Details of his day-to-day administration, correspondence, and possible writings remain sparse. He is known more through conciliar records and later local tradition than through a substantial personal literary corpus, and he should not be confused with the far more famous Remigius of Reims, who baptized Clovis in the late fifth century, nor with the scholar Remigius of Auxerre.

Remigius died on 28 October 875, in the last year of his long episcopate. He was venerated as a saint in the church of Lyon, and his feast has been observed on the anniversary of his death. No reliable account of a formal papal canonization survives, as was typical for bishops of the Carolingian age whose cults grew from local liturgical memory rather than from a later Roman process. Although many particulars of his biography cannot be recovered from the sources, Remigius of Lyon remains a documented participant in one of the central theological controversies of the ninth-century Latin church and a representative metropolitan of Carolingian Burgundy and the Lyonnais.
