Biography

Short Description

Restitutus was a Romano-British bishop of the early fourth century, attested as bishop of London (the Roman city of Londinium) by his subscription to the acts of the Council of Arles in 314. He is among the earliest Christians in Britain whose name is preserved in a contemporary official document. The council was summoned by the Emperor Constantine shortly after the Edict of Milan had granted legal toleration to the Church, and it dealt chiefly with the Donatist schism in North Africa as well as with questions of Easter, clerical discipline, and the reconciliation of those who had lapsed under persecution.

The surviving lists of signatories name three bishops from the province of Britain: Eborius of York, Restitutus of London, and Adelphius, whose see is described in the manuscripts as a colonia associated with London, a phrase that scholars have variously interpreted as Lincoln, Colchester, or Caerleon. Restitutus is explicitly styled episcopus de civitate Londinensi. His presence demonstrates that London already possessed an organized Christian community with an episcopal structure by the second decade of the fourth century. The name Restitutus, a typical Latin cognomen meaning restored, was widespread in the later empire and yields no further biographical clue about origin or rank.

No ancient narrative source, passio, or inscription supplies Restitutus's dates of birth or death, his place of origin, or the circumstances of his episcopate before or after 314. Later medieval and early modern writers occasionally numbered him among the saints of Britain, yet he has no established feast in the principal martyrologies, and no cult with relics or a dedicated church can be traced with certainty to the Roman or immediately post-Roman period. Assertions that he suffered martyrdom are incompatible with the date of the council, which met in a time of peace for the Church in the West.

Modern historical study therefore treats Restitutus as a documentary figure rather than as the subject of a developed hagiographical legend. He was neither pope nor patriarch. Nothing is known of a wife, children, or membership in a monastic order. His value for the historian lies in the firm evidence he provides that the British church of Constantine's reign was in communion with the churches of Gaul and Italy and was capable of sending representatives to an imperial council on the Continent.
