Biography

Short Description

Saint Reverianus (also known as Reverian or, in French, Révérien) is a third-century bishop and martyr associated with the church of Autun in Roman Gaul. The surviving portrait of his life depends almost entirely on later hagiographical tradition rather than on contemporary documents. According to that tradition he was of Italian origin and was consecrated a bishop and sent as a missionary into Gaul by Pope Felix I, who held the see of Rome from 269 to 274. He is said to have been accompanied by a priest named Paul. Together they preached in the region of Autun, the ancient Augustodunum, in what is now Burgundy in east-central France. Nothing reliable is known of his family, education, or earlier career, and no birth year or birthplace can be verified from a historical source.

The same tradition places his death in the reign of the emperor Aurelian (270–275), during a persecution of Christians that later martyrologies connect with that emperor. Reverianus, Paul, and ten companions are reported to have refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods and to have been put to death. The conventional date assigned to the martyrdom is about 273. The Roman Martyrology commemorates them on 1 June with the notice that they suffered at Autun under Aurelian. Local tradition in the Nivernais also links the passion to the site of the later village of Saint-Révérien in the present French department of Nièvre, a place that took its name from the bishop. Whether the executions occurred in Autun itself or in its wider territory cannot be established with certainty from independent evidence.

Historically the episode is obscure. No third-century chronicle or inscription confirms the mission or the deaths. The written Passio that recounts them is of later composition, and modern historians note that a general persecution under Aurelian is far less well attested than the Decian, Valerian, or Diocletianic persecutions. Pope Felix I’s dispatch of a missionary bishop to Autun likewise rests on the later legend rather than on papal archives. What can be affirmed is that a cult of Reverianus as bishop-martyr took root in Burgundy and the Nivernais at a relatively early date and that his name, with that of Paul and their companions, entered the martyrological tradition of the Latin Church.

Devotion continued through the Middle Ages. A church and a settlement bore his name at Saint-Révérien, and he was remembered among the early martyrs of the church of Autun, a see that also honored figures such as Symphorian. Because so little can be verified outside the hagiographical cycle, Reverianus remains an example of an early Gallic missionary bishop whose memory was preserved as martyrdom by the Christian communities of central Gaul, while the precise facts of his birth, ministry, and death stay beyond the reach of reliable historical reconstruction. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his cult belongs to the ancient, pre-congregation veneration of martyrs.
