Biography

Short Description

Rhain Dremrudd, whose Welsh epithet means “red-eyed” or “of the red glance,” was a king of Dyfed in southwestern Wales in the early medieval period. He is known almost exclusively from medieval Welsh genealogical collections, notably the Harleian genealogies and later manuscripts such as Jesus College MS 20. Those tracts identify him as Rhain ap Cadwgan, son of Cadwgan ap Cathen, and place him in the royal line of Dyfed that claimed descent from Irish Déisi settlers of the late Roman era and from earlier British rulers of the fifth and sixth centuries, including the Vortiporius (Gwrthefyr) denounced by Gildas.

No contemporary chronicle records his birth, accession, or death. Historians therefore locate him only approximately, by counting generations back from later Dyfed kings whose obits appear in the Annales Cambriae, in the late seventh or the first half of the eighth century. The nickname Dremrudd is nowhere explained; such physical or personal bynames were common among early Welsh princes. Dyfed itself was a modest coastal kingdom occupying roughly the old territory of the Demetae and, in this era, was under pressure from expanding neighbours such as Ceredigion.

The same genealogies name at least one son, Tewdws (also Tewdos or Tewdwr) ap Rhain, presented as his successor. From Tewdws the line continues to Maredudd ap Tewdws, whose death in 796 is entered in the Annales Cambriae, and then to a later king Rhain who died in 808. Whether Rhain Dremrudd’s realm remained undivided or was partitioned among heirs is not clearly stated. The eighth-century political history of Dyfed is otherwise poorly documented, though the kingdom survived as a distinct polity until it was absorbed into Deheubarth in the tenth century.

Beyond the pedigree almost nothing can be said of his actions, alliances, or religious patronage. He does not appear in the surviving lives of Welsh saints, and there is no evidence that he was himself venerated or assigned a feast day. Like most rulers of the smaller Welsh kingdoms in the seventh and eighth centuries, he remains a name in a genealogy rather than a figure in narrative history. The sources that preserve his memory were compiled centuries later and served dynastic rather than biographical purposes.
