Biography

Riccardo Pampuri was born Erminio Filippo Pampuri on 2 August 1897 in Trivolzio, a village in the province of Pavia in Lombardy, northern Italy. He was the tenth of eleven children of Innocente Pampuri and Angela Campari. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was three years old and his father died when he was ten; he was then raised by a maternal aunt in nearby Torrino and by other relatives. From an early age he showed marked piety and a desire to help the sick and the poor. He completed secondary studies in Pavia and entered the medical faculty of the University of Pavia, where he took part in Catholic student associations.

His studies were interrupted by the First World War. He served as a sergeant in the medical corps of the Italian army, working in military hospitals and on the front. After the war he returned to the university and graduated in medicine in 1921. He was appointed municipal physician of Morimondo in the province of Milan, where he practiced for six years. He became known for treating the poor free of charge, for his work with Catholic Action and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and for a life of prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments.

In 1927 he entered the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God (Fatebenefratelli) in Milan, taking the religious name Riccardo. After his novitiate and profession he continued to practice medicine in the order’s hospitals in Brescia and Milan. He was remembered for humility, cheerfulness, and complete dedication to the sick, uniting medical care with spiritual support. In the spring of 1930 he contracted a serious pulmonary illness and died on 1 May 1930 in Milan at the age of thirty-two.

He was first buried in Milan; his remains were later transferred to the parish church of his native Trivolzio, which became a place of pilgrimage. Popular devotion grew rapidly. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 4 October 1981 and canonized him on 1 November 1989. His feast day is 1 May. Saint Riccardo Pampuri is honored especially as a patron of physicians and as an example of the Christian doctor.
