Biography

Short Description

The given name Richard, from Germanic elements commonly glossed as brave or powerful ruler, was widespread among clergy and laity in medieval Western Europe, especially in England, France, and the German lands. Christian hagiography records several men of this name with local or wider cults, but they belong to different centuries, regions, and states of life and cannot be treated as one person. The present subject is identified only by that given name, with no see, locality, century, or feast attached. A unique historical identity therefore cannot be verified, and precise fields such as birth year, death year, and burial place are left blank rather than filled by conjecture.

The best-documented saint of the name is the English bishop Richard of Chichester, also called Richard de Wych, a thirteenth-century figure associated by medieval lives with Worcestershire, with study at Oxford, Paris, and Bologna, and with the diocese of Chichester. Those sources present him as a reforming pastor, a defender of church rights against royal pressure, and a man of personal austerity who died in Kent while preaching. A cult developed at Chichester, and he was later recognized among the saints of the Latin Church, with an April feast in English calendars. Those details belong to that bishop alone and must not be transferred to every Richard.

Other Richards appear in martyrologies and local tradition. A figure often styled Richard the King or Richard of Wessex is linked with Lucca in Tuscany as a pilgrim and as the father of the missionary siblings Willibald, Winnebald, and Walburga; modern historians treat the royal title as legendary and the outline as thin. A Saint Richard of Andria is remembered as a bishop in Apulia, with a largely legendary vita. The English hermit and mystical writer Richard Rolle of Hampole, active in the fourteenth century, was widely read in the later Middle Ages but was not formally canonized in the same way as Richard of Chichester. None of these men can be assumed to be the subject without further evidence.

No Bishop of Rome has taken the name Richard, and the name is not attested among patriarchs or catholicoi of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East traditions. Marital status, children, religious order, and patronages vary by individual: a later medieval Latin diocesan bishop would normally have been bound to clerical celibacy, while a legendary Anglo-Saxon lay pilgrim might have been married, but such inferences are not documentation. Patronages recorded for Richard of Chichester, including ties to Sussex and to certain trades, do not automatically apply to other Richards.

Because the subject cannot be uniquely identified, only what is secure is recorded here: the name is masculine in historical usage; the papacy and the Eastern patriarchal offices are not attested for any Richard; and the remaining biographical fields stay empty until a place, a century, or a cult site is specified. Hagiographical method requires preferring silence to a borrowed life.
