Biography

Short Description

Richard Martin was an English Roman Catholic layman martyred in the late sixteenth century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Surviving records identify him as a native of Shropshire. Later Catholic sources describe him as having been educated at Brasenose College in the University of Oxford before living as a gentleman of independent means. Like many English Catholics of his generation, he faced increasing legal pressure after statutes defined the presence of Catholic priests ordained abroad as high treason and made the harbouring or assistance of such priests a capital offence.

In 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, a number of Catholics were arrested in and around London. Richard Martin was among those brought to trial at the Old Bailey on 29 August 1588. He stood accused with the seminary priest Richard Leigh and several other laymen, including Edward Shelley, Richard Flower (sometimes recorded as Richard Lloyd), and John Roche. The charge against Martin was that he had given aid to priests or had been found in their company, acts that Elizabethan penal laws treated as treason. All of the accused were condemned.

On 30 August 1588 the group was taken to the gallows at Tyburn, then a well-known place of public execution on the western edge of London. There Richard Martin suffered hanging, drawing, and quartering. Catholic writers of the period and later hagiographers present him as having met his death with fortitude, offering his life for the Catholic faith.

Details of Martin’s family life, if any, have not been preserved in the sources, and he is not known to have belonged to a religious order. On 15 December 1929 Pope Pius XI beatified him together with many other English and Welsh martyrs of the Reformation period. In the liturgical calendar of England and Wales the martyrs of that era, including Blessed Richard Martin, are commemorated collectively on 4 May; some martyrologies and local observances also remember him on 30 August, the date of his execution. Beyond these facts the historical record concerning Richard Martin remains sparse, as is often the case with lay martyrs of the period whose lives were not documented by a religious community.
