Biography

Short Description

Richard Whiting was an English Benedictine monk and the last Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, a house long associated with early British Christianity and, by the later Middle Ages, one of the wealthiest monasteries in the kingdom. Traditional accounts, followed by older Catholic reference works, place his birth at Wrington in Somerset in the mid-fifteenth century; a precise year of birth is not established from contemporary records. He was educated first at the monastic school of Glastonbury and afterwards at the University of Cambridge, where standard biographical notices record that he took a Master of Arts in the 1480s and later proceeded Doctor of Divinity. Returning to Glastonbury, he entered the full monastic life of the Benedictine community and held responsible offices, including that of chamberlain. Later writers described him as a man of learning, regular observance, and generous hospitality.

Upon the death of Abbot Richard Bere in 1525, Whiting was elected his successor. As abbot of Glastonbury he was a mitred prelate and sat among the lords spiritual in Parliament. Under his rule the abbey continued as a major landowner, a centre of pilgrimage, and a provider of alms and hospitality in Somerset. He appears to have administered the estates with care and to have remained on workable terms with the Crown in the years before the final breach with Rome. Like other heads of great houses, however, he was drawn into the crisis created by Henry VIII’s marital and ecclesiastical policies. The royal supremacy over the Church of England, asserted in 1534, required acknowledgments that many regular clergy found difficult to reconcile with their vows and with papal authority.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries, carried through in stages from the mid-1530s, left Glastonbury among the last of the greater abbeys still standing. In September 1539 Thomas Cromwell sent commissioners—Richard Layton, Richard Pollard, and Thomas Moyle—to the abbey. They searched the buildings, interrogated the community, and alleged that treasure had been concealed from the king. Whiting, by then an old man, was arrested, sent to the Tower of London, and later returned to Somerset. At Wells he was tried for treason in a hurried proceeding that later Catholic writers regarded as a travesty of justice. Official Tudor accounts stressed concealment of plate and goods and implied other treasons; recusant and hagiographical tradition held that he was condemned for refusing to surrender the monastery voluntarily and for remaining loyal to the Holy See.

On 15 November 1539 Whiting was executed on Glastonbury Tor, the hill overlooking the monastery. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered, the penalty prescribed for treason. Two members of his community, John Thorne the treasurer and Roger James the sacristan, suffered with him. The abbot’s head was set over the gate of the despoiled abbey; the quarters of his body were displayed at Wells, Bath, Ilchester, and Bridgwater. The house itself was stripped, its library and treasures dispersed, and the site passed into lay hands. In the Roman Catholic Church Whiting, Thorne, and James were beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 13 May 1895 among English martyrs of the Reformation period. Blessed Richard Whiting is commemorated on 15 November. Historians continue to debate the mix of political, financial, and religious motives in his fall, but the outline of his career—from Cambridge-trained monk and respected abbot to victim of the dissolution—is firmly established in the sixteenth-century English record.
