Biography

Short Description

Saint Rieul of Senlis, known in Latin as Regulus and in French sources also as Riel, Rigual, or Rieule, is venerated as the first bishop of Senlis, the ancient city of the Silvanectes in northern Gaul (today in the department of Oise, France). Traditional hagiography places him in the third century and assigns his death to about the year 260, though that date rests on later legend rather than on any contemporary record. He is commemorated on 30 March. Almost nothing about his life can be verified from sources written in his own era. What survives belongs to the medieval cult of a founding bishop, of a type common among the early churches of Gaul, and must be handled with caution.

According to the later vitae, Rieul was of Greek origin. He is said to have gone to Rome and to have been sent into Gaul by Pope Clement I, in company with Saint Denis of Paris, Saint Lucien of Beauvais, Saint Quentin, and other missionaries. This so-called Clementine mission is a well-known hagiographical motif and is chronologically impossible if taken literally, since Clement died at the end of the first century, long before the evangelization of the Silvanectes can plausibly be dated. The same tradition makes Rieul a disciple or companion of Denis, whose own Passio is itself a late and largely legendary text. Modern historians therefore treat the story of Rieul’s origins and his Roman commission as pious narrative rather than as recoverable biography. No verified year or place of birth has been transmitted.

In the local tradition of Senlis he appears as the apostle of the Silvanectes and as the organizer of the first Christian community at Augustomagus, the Roman town that became Senlis. He is described as the first occupant of the episcopal see. No authentic episcopal list from the third century survives to confirm the claim, and the earliest historically secure bishops of Senlis belong to a later period. Nonetheless, the Church of Senlis regarded Rieul as its founder, and his name stood at the head of its catalogue of bishops. He is said to have died at Senlis around 260. His tomb became a focus of veneration. A church dedicated to him, the collegiate church of Saint-Rieul, rose over or near the traditional place of burial and remained one of the principal sanctuaries of the medieval city, distinct from the later cathedral of Notre-Dame.

The cult of Saint Rieul was firmly established in the Middle Ages. His relics were preserved at Senlis and were the object of translations and of pilgrimage. The feast on 30 March entered martyrologies and local calendars. Dedications and place-names of Saint-Rieul in France attest to the spread of his cult. Care must be taken not to confuse him with Saint Rieul (Regulus) of Reims, a seventh-century bishop of Reims who died about 698 and who is sometimes assigned the same or a neighboring feast day; the two figures are distinct in the tradition, even if later writers occasionally mixed their legends. Rieul of Senlis was never pope or patriarch, and no reliable source records a wife, children, or membership in a later religious order. He is honored as a patron of Senlis. Canonization in the modern papal sense did not apply to such early cults; veneration grew by local acclaim and was later accepted in the wider Latin Church.

Because the documentary basis is so thin, a cautious account must emphasize the limits of what can be known. Rieul belongs to the group of shadowy founding saints of northern Gallic sees, whose lives were written centuries after the events they purport to describe. His historical existence as a third-century missionary bishop cannot be proved from independent evidence, yet the continuity of his cult at Senlis, the dedication of a major church, and his place in the liturgical calendar show that the medieval city believed itself to possess an apostolic founder of that name. Reports of a Greek homeland remain legendary. The traditional death year of 260 is the date given in standard hagiographical and encyclopedic notices, not a date fixed by contemporary testimony.
