Biography

Short Description

Saint Rigobert (Latin Rigobertus) was a Frankish Benedictine monk and metropolitan bishop whose career belongs to the late Merovingian period in Neustria. Reliable contemporary records of his origins do not survive: neither a year of birth nor a birthplace is attested, and later vitae do not supply a trustworthy genealogy. He is first known as a monk, and afterward abbot, of the Abbey of Orbais (Orbais-l’Abbaye) in the Marne, a house living under the Rule of Saint Benedict. From that monastery he was raised to the see of Reims, an appointment generally placed in the mid-690s, in succession to Bishop Réol (Reolus). As archbishop he is remembered in the tradition for pastoral care, the maintenance of clerical and monastic discipline, and charity toward the poor, though specific administrative acts are sparsely documented.

His later episcopate coincided with the succession crisis that followed the death of Pepin of Herstal, mayor of the palace, in 714. Charles Martel, Pepin’s son, sought to impose his authority on Neustria against the party of Plectrude and the child Theudoald. Later hagiographical and chronicle tradition holds that Rigobert would not give Charles the political support he demanded of the church of Reims. Accounts differ as to the precise form of the refusal—whether he declined an oath of fidelity, refused to open the city to Charles’s forces, or would not perform a baptism or other public act in Charles’s interest—but the political outcome is consistent across the sources. After Charles had secured power he deposed Rigobert, an event usually dated to about 717, and installed Milo, an aristocratic warrior who already held Trier and who occupied Reims in commendam. The episode is often cited as an early illustration of Carolingian control over major Frankish sees.

Removed from his diocese, Rigobert spent a period in exile, according to some narratives in Aquitaine or Gascony, before being permitted to reside at Gernicourt, a village on the Aisne not far from Reims. There he lived in relative obscurity, devoted to prayer and ascetic practice. Tradition places his death at Gernicourt in 743, although a few older authorities prefer a date nearer 750; an exact year cannot be established from strictly contemporary evidence. He was buried at Gernicourt. A local cult formed around his tomb. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 4 January. In later centuries relics associated with him were translated and he remained a figure of regional veneration in the diocese of Reims. Because the principal narratives are medieval vitae and martyrologies rather than eighth-century documents, historians accept the broad outline of his monastic formation, episcopate, deposition by Charles Martel, and exile, while treating reported miracles and reconstructed dialogues with caution.
