Biography

Short Description

Robert Bellarmine (Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino) was born on 4 October 1542 in Montepulciano in Tuscany, then under Medici Florence. His father, Vincenzo Bellarmino, came from a noble but financially strained family; his mother, Cinzia Cervini, was the sister of Cardinal Marcello Cervini, who reigned briefly as Pope Marcellus II in 1555. Educated by the Jesuits in his native town, he entered the Society of Jesus at Rome in 1560, against family hopes that he would pursue a secular clerical career with better prospects of preferment. After the novitiate and philosophical studies at the Roman College, he taught humanities at Florence and Mondovì, then studied theology at Padua and at Louvain. He was ordained priest in 1570 and lectured at Louvain on Thomas Aquinas, already showing the combination of scholastic method and pastoral clarity that marked his later work.

Recalled to Rome in 1576, he was given the newly established chair of controversial theology at the Roman College. The lectures he delivered there became his principal work, the Disputationes de controversiis Christianae fidei adversus huius temporis haereticos, published in three volumes between 1586 and 1593. The Controversies offered a systematic Catholic reply to Protestant theology and made him the foremost controversialist of the Counter-Reformation; they were widely read, translated, and attacked. He also wrote a Hebrew grammar, a commentary on the Psalms, and two catechisms that remained in use for centuries. He served as rector of the Roman College from 1592, as Jesuit provincial of Naples from 1594, and from 1597 as theologian to Pope Clement VIII and examiner of bishops. Clement created him cardinal in 1599 and in 1602 named him Archbishop of Capua, where he resided and pursued pastoral reform until he was recalled to the Curia after the election of Pope Paul V in 1605.

In Rome he sat on major congregations, including the Holy Office and the Index, and took part in the revision of the Latin Vulgate that produced the Sixto-Clementine edition. He was involved in the De Auxiliis controversy over grace and free will between Dominicans and Jesuits, and in diplomatic-theological disputes with Venice during the Interdict and with James I of England over the Oath of Allegiance. In 1616, as a leading consultor of the Holy Office, he formally admonished Galileo Galilei not to hold or defend Copernican cosmology as established fact, an episode that later placed Bellarmine at the center of historical debate on the Galileo affair. Despite high office he lived with notable austerity and directed much of his income to the poor.

He died in Rome on 17 September 1621. His cause advanced slowly; he was beatified in 1923 and canonized in 1930 by Pope Pius XI, who in 1931 declared him a Doctor of the Church. His liturgical feast is 17 September. He is invoked as a patron of catechists, catechumens, and canon lawyers. After an initial burial elsewhere in Rome, his remains were translated to the Church of Sant'Ignazio, where they are still venerated.
