Biography

Short Description

Robert-François Guérin du Rocher was a French Jesuit priest numbered among the Blessed Martyrs of September 1792, the large group of non-juring clergy killed in Paris during the September Massacres of the French Revolution. He was born on 12 December 1736 at Sainte-Colombe in western France. His elder brother, Pierre-Louis Guérin du Rocher, likewise entered the Society of Jesus and likewise died in the same massacre, so the two are often commemorated together in Jesuit and French martyrological notices. Robert entered the Society in the mid-eighteenth century and received the formation then customary for French Jesuits, at a period when the order still staffed colleges and other apostolates in the kingdom, before the sequence of suppressions that ended its legal existence in France and then throughout the Church.

The Society of Jesus was suppressed in France in 1762 and universally by Pope Clement XIV in 1773. Like many former Jesuits, Guérin du Rocher continued to exercise the priesthood as a secular cleric rather than abandoning ministry. Surviving notices do not preserve a detailed itinerary of his posts after the suppression, and he remains, for the historian, a relatively poorly documented figure outside the martyr lists. What is clear is that by the early Revolution he belonged to the large body of clergy who refused the oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy of 1790, thereby remaining aligned with Rome and with the traditional episcopal order against the Constitutional Church created by the National Assembly. Non-juring priests were progressively treated as political enemies, subjected to surveillance, deportation measures, and, after the fall of the monarchy, mass arrest.

In August 1792, following the storming of the Tuileries and the collapse of the constitutional monarchy, refractory clergy in Paris were rounded up and confined in improvised prisons. Among the principal places of detention was the former Carmelite convent (Les Carmes) on the rue de Vaugirard. Both Guérin du Rocher brothers were among those held there. On 2–3 September 1792, during the September Massacres, armed crowds and fédérés imposed a summary interrogation on the prisoners and slaughtered those who would not take the civic oath. Robert Guérin du Rocher was killed at the Carmes on 3 September 1792. The victims were thrown into a mass grave in the convent garden; remains later recovered are associated with the crypt of the church of Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes, though individual identification of each body was not possible.

He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926 together with 190 other victims of the September Massacres, honored collectively as martyrs who died for fidelity to the Catholic Church rather than for a merely political cause. Their liturgical commemoration is kept on 2 September. Guérin du Rocher has no widely attested individual patronages, and he was not separately canonized. Historical knowledge of his inner life, preaching, and day-to-day ministry remains thin; he is known primarily through Jesuit catalogues, the acts of the 1926 beatification of the September martyrs, and the parallel vocation and death of his brother Pierre-Louis.
