Biography

Short Description

Robert of Newminster was a twelfth-century English priest, Benedictine monk, and Cistercian abbot who became the object of a regional cult after his death. He was born at Gargrave in the district of Craven in Yorkshire, in northern England, probably in the late eleventh or very early twelfth century; no contemporary record preserves an exact year of birth. Later medieval and early modern accounts state that he received an education in the schools of Paris and then returned to Yorkshire, where he was ordained to the priesthood and served as parish priest of Gargrave, his native place. After a period of secular pastoral work he sought a stricter religious life and entered the Benedictine monastery of Whitby Abbey on the North Sea coast of Yorkshire.

From Whitby, with the leave of his abbot, Robert attached himself to the reforming party of monks who in 1132 withdrew from St Mary's Abbey at York in order to follow a more rigorous observance. That group settled in Skeldale and established Fountains Abbey, which affiliated with the Cistercian Order and became one of the principal Cistercian houses of England. Robert belonged to this founding generation at Fountains and was formed in the Cistercian interpretation of the Rule of Saint Benedict, with its emphasis on simplicity, manual labour, and liturgical prayer.

In or about 1138 he was chosen to lead a colony of monks from Fountains to Northumberland, where they founded Newminster Abbey near Morpeth, the first daughter house of Fountains. Robert served as Newminster's first abbot for roughly two decades. Writers of his cult describe him as a man of notable mildness, humility, and love of poverty, who combined administrative care for a growing community with personal austerity. Under his abbacy Newminster itself sent out foundations, including houses at Pipewell in Northamptonshire, Roche in Yorkshire, and Sawley (also called Salley) in Yorkshire, so that his influence extended through a small family of northern and midland Cistercian monasteries. Hagiographical tradition also links him with the hermit Saint Godric of Finchale: Godric is said to have enjoyed a spiritual friendship with Robert and to have seen, at the moment of Robert's death, a vision of the abbot's soul being borne up to heaven.

Robert died at Newminster on 7 June 1159 and was buried in the abbey church. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and a liturgical cult grew within the Cistercian Order and in northern England, with his feast kept on 7 June. He was never formally canonized by a pope according to the later centralized procedures of the Roman Church; his status as a saint rests on medieval veneration, inclusion in martyrologies and Cistercian calendars, and local devotion. Newminster Abbey was suppressed at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, and the subsequent history of his relics is not securely documented.
