Biography

Short Description

Robert the Monk, known in Latin as Robertus Monachus and also called Robert of Reims, was a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Saint-Remi at Reims in northern France and the author of the Historia Iherosolimitana, one of the most widely read medieval Latin narratives of the First Crusade. Virtually nothing can be established with certainty about his family, place of birth, or the year of his birth; he belongs to the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries and is documented only through his association with Saint-Remi and through the chronicle that bears his name. Saint-Remi was a prominent Benedictine house closely tied to the archbishops of Reims, and Robert wrote as a member of that monastic community rather than as a bishop, papal legate, or secular clerk.

In the prologue to the Historia Iherosolimitana, Robert states that he had been present at the Council of Clermont in November 1095, when Pope Urban II called for an armed pilgrimage to aid Eastern Christians and recover Jerusalem. Historians continue to debate whether this claim should be taken at face value, but it is not inherently implausible for a monk of a major northern French abbey. Some years later, conventionally dated to about 1106 or 1107, Robert’s abbot asked him to recast the anonymous Gesta Francorum, a relatively unadorned account of the crusade that had begun to circulate in the West. Robert produced a longer, more polished, and more theologically explicit history. He rewrote Urban’s sermon at Clermont in elevated language, stressing the special role of the Franks, the penitential character of the expedition, and the liberation of the Holy Sepulchre, and he supplied connecting narrative and moral commentary throughout.

The resulting work became the most popular of the early crusade histories. It survives in a very large number of medieval manuscripts, far more than the Gesta Francorum itself, and it was later translated into Old French and other vernaculars. Robert’s version of the Clermont address, though composed more than a decade after the event and shaped by hindsight and ideology, became the standard literary image of the crusade’s preaching for later generations. His chronicle belongs with the roughly contemporary recastings by Baldric of Bourgueil and Guibert of Nogent, all of which sought to give the raw Gesta a more acceptable Latin style and a clearer sacred meaning. Robert gave particular attention to leaders from northern France and the Empire’s western borderlands and presented the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 as the fulfillment of divine plan.

Beyond this literary activity, Robert’s life is poorly documented. Attempts to identify him with a particular abbot of Saint-Remi or with other Roberts in the Reims necrologies remain inconclusive, and no reliable contemporary source records an exact year of death or a place of burial. He was a professed monk and is not known to have married or to have had children. He was never Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see, and there is no credible evidence of formal canonization, beatification, or an assigned feast day in the Roman or local calendars. His enduring importance is as a shaper of crusading memory: through the Historia Iherosolimitana, a Benedictine monk of Reims helped define how Latin Christendom would remember the origins and meaning of the First Crusade.
