Biography

Short Description

Roger Filcock was an English Jesuit priest and Roman Catholic martyr of the late Elizabethan penal period. He was born at Sandwich in Kent in the later sixteenth century; a round date of about 1570 is often given in later hagiographical notices, but no contemporary record establishing an exact year of birth is known. He belonged to the generation of English Catholics formed after the Elizabethan religious settlement, when the Mass had been outlawed, recusancy was punished by fines and imprisonment, and a statute of 1585 made it high treason for a priest ordained abroad to enter or remain in England. In that climate, young men intending priesthood commonly left the kingdom in secret to study at English colleges on the Continent.

Filcock received his priestly formation at the English College at Rheims and later at the English College in Valladolid in Spain, seminaries established to supply clergy for the English mission. He was ordained a priest and became a member of the Society of Jesus. Like other missionary priests of the time he is sometimes recorded under an alias (Arthur Filcock), a precaution against informers. He returned to England toward the end of the 1590s to work among recusant Catholics, celebrating the sacraments in secret and relying on a network of lay hosts who themselves risked death for harbouring priests.

He was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and tried for his priesthood. On 27 February 1601 he was executed at Tyburn, then a place of public execution on the outskirts of London, by hanging, drawing, and quartering, the penalty laid down for treason. He suffered on the same day as Anne Line, a widow condemned for sheltering priests, and Mark Barkworth, a Benedictine. Contemporary and later Catholic accounts treat the three as companions in martyrdom. The remains of those put to death at Tyburn were not ordinarily given a recorded Christian burial, and no burial place for Filcock is known.

Filcock was not among the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales canonized in 1970. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 22 November 1987 as one of the Eighty-five Martyrs of England and Wales. He has not been canonized. His individual liturgical commemoration follows the date of his death, 27 February. Beyond the outline of his training, Jesuit membership, missionary return, and execution, the surviving record of his life is thin: family background, the precise course of his ministry in England, and many personal details remain undocumented.
