Biography

Short Description

Rögnvald Kali Kolsson, also known as Saint Ronald of Orkney, was a Norwegian nobleman who became Earl of Orkney in the twelfth century and was later venerated as a saint. He was born in Norway in the early twelfth century, the son of the Norwegian lendmann Kol Kalisson and of Gunnhild, a sister of Earl Magnus Erlendsson of Orkney, later canonized as Saint Magnus. His given name was Kali; he assumed the name Rögnvald, recalling an earlier earl of Orkney, when he pressed a claim to a share of the islands. Through his mother he was the nephew of Saint Magnus, whose martyrdom and cult shaped Rögnvald’s own career, piety, and later reputation.

King Sigurd Magnusson of Norway granted Rögnvald a claim to half the earldom of Orkney, the portion associated with the line of Saint Magnus. Rögnvald did not immediately secure power in the islands. With the counsel and military support of his father Kol he eventually established himself as earl, at times sharing authority with other claimants, notably Harald Maddadsson. In fulfilment of a vow he initiated the building of a great stone cathedral at Kirkwall dedicated to his uncle Saint Magnus, a project begun in the 1130s that became the principal church of the earldom and his own later burial place. The cathedral expressed both dynastic legitimacy and the growing Christian identity of Norse Orkney.

Rögnvald was also a poet in the skaldic tradition, and the Orkneyinga Saga preserves numerous verses attributed to him. In the early 1150s he undertook a notable pilgrimage and crusading voyage to the Holy Land, sailing with a large company that included Bishop William of Orkney and the Norwegian noble Erling Skakke. The expedition, vividly described in the saga, took him to the coasts of France—where an episode involving the viscountess of Narbonne is recorded—then to Galicia, the Holy Land, and Constantinople, before a return through Europe. The journey enhanced his reputation for piety, courtesy, and martial adventure, and it is one of the best-documented Norse expeditions of its kind.

In 1158 Rögnvald was killed in Caithness by Thorbjorn Klerk, a former associate who had turned against him. His body was taken to Kirkwall and buried in Saint Magnus Cathedral. A cult developed around him, miracles were reported at his tomb, and in 1192 Pope Celestine III recognized his sanctity. He is commemorated on 20 August and is associated especially with the Orkney Islands. The principal narrative source for his life remains the Orkneyinga Saga, which presents him as an ideal of the Christian Norse earl: generous, eloquent, devout, and ultimately a martyr.
