Biography

Short Description

Romano Bottegal was born on 28 December 1921 in San Donà di Piave, in the province of Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. He grew up in a Catholic setting in the interwar years and entered the Cistercian Abbey of Tre Fontane on the outskirts of Rome, a house of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (the Trappists). Tre Fontane stands on the site traditionally associated with the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul and was known for a strict Benedictine observance of liturgical prayer, silence, and manual labor. There Bottegal received his monastic formation, made profession in the order, and was ordained a priest. He remained a Trappist for the rest of his life and never married or had children.

After years in the cenobitic life of the Roman abbey, he sought a more hidden, eremitical vocation. With the leave of his superiors he left Italy in the 1960s for Lebanon, where he lived as a hermit while remaining a Trappist priest, in contact with Maronite Catholic communities and other Christians of the Levant. He lived in marked material poverty and simplicity, devoted himself to prayer, and learned Arabic in order to dwell among the local people. His later years unfolded in a region of ancient Christian presence and of everyday coexistence among Maronites, Orthodox Christians, and Muslims.

When civil war broke out in Lebanon in 1975, Bottegal did not return to Europe. He stayed in the country amid the fighting and the suffering of civilians, continuing a concealed life of prayer and solidarity. He died in Beirut on 19 February 1978. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

The Catholic Church has not beatified or canonized him, and he has no official feast day or declared patronages. He remains a relatively obscure figure of twentieth-century monasticism, remembered mainly in Italian Trappist and Lebanese Christian circles as a priest-hermit who chose evangelical poverty in the Middle East. Published documentation of his inner life and day-to-day circumstances is limited compared with better-known monastic contemporaries, and the secure outline of his life is his Veneto birth, Trappist profession and priesthood at Tre Fontane, eremitical years in Lebanon, and death in Beirut.
