Biography

Short Description

Saint Romphaire (also known in French as Romfroy or Romachaire, and in Latin as Rumpharius or Rompharius) was a bishop of Coutances in the Cotentin, in what is now Normandy. He is placed by the traditional episcopal catalogues of that see in the sixth century, in the Merovingian period. Almost nothing about his life can be verified from contemporary documents. He is known from later lists of the bishops of Coutances and from local liturgical commemoration, not from letters, charters, or conciliar acts that can be securely ascribed to him. Even the various spellings of his name reflect the instability of early medieval transmission rather than a richly documented career.

The diocese of Coutances, whose Roman-period centre was Constantia, appears in later tradition as a fifth-century foundation, with Ereptiole often named as an early bishop. In the sixth century the see is more firmly attested through Possessor, who took part in the Council of Orléans in 511, and through Saint Lô (Laudus), the best-known early bishop of Coutances, whose death is traditionally assigned to the middle of the sixth century. Romphaire stands in the received lists as a successor of Saint Lô. Because those catalogues were compiled or regularized long after the Merovingian age, the length and exact dates of Romphaire’s episcopate cannot be established. No surviving sixth-century source describes his origin, education, or pastoral acts.

His cult remained a local one. He is commemorated on 18 November in the tradition of the church of Coutances. In the religious geography of the Cotentin he was always a lesser figure beside Saint Lô, who gave his name to the town of Saint-Lô and whose legend was elaborated in the Middle Ages. Evidence of dedications or of a developed hagiographical cycle for Romphaire is modest. No early independent vita of historical value is known. Later pious notices sometimes attach conventional episcopal virtues to his name, but such material cannot be controlled against contemporary evidence and should not be treated as biography.

Romphaire was neither pope nor patriarch. There is no reliable testimony about his family, whether he was married, or whether he had children, nor about membership in a monastic order in the later sense of that term. Like many Merovingian bishops, he was recognized as a saint through diocesan cult and eventual inclusion in local calendars, not through a formal papal canonization of the kind that became standard in later centuries. Modern historical judgment therefore accepts, with caution, that a bishop of this name occupied the see of Coutances in the sixth century, while leaving his birth, death, burial, and personal history unknown.
