Biography

Short Description

Romulus of Fiesole, known in Italian as San Romolo, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a bishop and martyr and as the principal patron of Fiesole in Tuscany. Medieval hagiography presents him as a Roman of noble birth who was converted by the Apostle Peter, ordained by him, and sent to evangelize Etruria. In this tradition he is the first bishop of Fiesole. The story belongs to a familiar medieval pattern in which Italian cities and dioceses claimed a direct link to the apostolic age in order to enhance the antiquity and prestige of their sees.

The Passio Sancti Romuli, a Latin passion narrative composed around the eleventh century, recounts his preaching in and around Fiesole, the conversion of many of the local population, and his arrest in a persecution attributed to the emperor Domitian. The text names companions who shared his mission and martyrdom, among them Carissimus, Crescentius, and Marchisianus. According to the legend they were tortured and put to death at Fiesole. The Roman Martyrology records him on 6 July as bishop and martyr of Fiesole and repeats the claim that he was a disciple of Saint Peter who suffered under Domitian. No first-century or late antique source independently confirms his existence, his connection with Peter, or the circumstances of his death. Historians therefore regard the Petrine discipleship and the Domitianic martyrdom as legendary constructions.

Fiesole itself was a significant Etruscan and Roman city, and a Christian community and episcopal see developed there in late antiquity, but the earliest bishops who can be documented historically belong to later centuries. The cult of Saint Romulus is clearly visible in the Middle Ages. In the early eleventh century Bishop Jacopo of Fiesole rebuilt the cathedral, dedicated it to Romulus, and enshrined relics attributed to him. The composition or circulation of the passio is often associated with this same period of institutional and liturgical promotion. Veneration of San Romolo also served the identity of the diocese of Fiesole, which long stood in a complex and sometimes rival relationship with nearby Florence.

The cathedral of Fiesole remains the center of his cult; his relics are preserved there. He is the patron saint of the city and of the diocese. His feast day is 6 July. Artists working in Tuscany depicted him as a bishop-martyr in altarpieces and other church furnishings connected with Fiesole. Because the only narrative of his life is a late and conventional passio, a careful account must distinguish the medieval legend from what can actually be known: namely, that from the central Middle Ages onward Romulus has been honored as Fiesole’s apostolic bishop-martyr and civic patron, and that this devotion has shaped the cathedral, the liturgy, and the local religious identity of the city.
