Biography

Short Description

Romulus of Genoa, known in Italian as San Romolo and in Ligurian as Remo or Roemo, is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church and as an early bishop of Genoa in Liguria. Virtually nothing about his life can be established from contemporary records. He appears on the traditional list of bishops of Genoa as a successor of Saint Syrus, a figure whom later legend placed in the fourth century. The early portion of that episcopal catalogue was compiled in the Middle Ages and cannot be confirmed by inscriptions or letters of the period. Consequently even the century in which Romulus lived remains uncertain. One line of tradition would locate him in late antiquity. Another, followed by some modern summaries, assigns his death to about 641 and explains his departure from Genoa as flight from the Lombards, who entered Italy in 568. The two reconstructions cannot both be true, and neither rests on a firmly dated primary source.

Medieval hagiography in Liguria presents Romulus as a native of Villa Matutiae, also called Matutia, a settlement on the western Ligurian coast that later took the name Sanremo from Sanctus Romulus. While bishop of Genoa he is said to have withdrawn to that place in a time of invasion or unrest and to have died there. A church was dedicated to him, and the civic identity of Sanremo became closely tied to his memory. In the hills above the coastal town, the district still called San Romolo and its sanctuary are associated by local tradition with his tomb. The modern form of the place-name, Sanremo rather than San Romolo, is a later linguistic development, but the derivation from the saint's name is not in doubt.

The cult of Romulus remained essentially local. He is the patron saint of Sanremo. His principal feast is observed on 13 October; the church of Genoa has also commemorated him on 22 December. He was neither pope nor patriarch of an Eastern see, and he is not known to have belonged to a religious order; tradition remembers him as a diocesan bishop. No reliable evidence survives concerning marriage or children. His veneration is of the type later classified as pre-congregation: it arose from popular and episcopal custom long before the papacy reserved formal beatification and canonization, and it was recognized by inclusion in local calendars and, in brief form, in martyrological notices.

Romulus therefore illustrates the character of many early Ligurian episcopal cults. The Christian origins of Genoa itself are only dimly visible before the fifth century. The medieval church of the city looked back to a sequence of founding bishops whose biographies were expanded by legend. No independent vita of Romulus, no authentic relic inscription, and no chronicle entry fix his dates or the acts of his episcopate. What can be affirmed with confidence is cultic and toponymic: a bishop of this name was honoured in Genoa and on the Riviera di Ponente; Villa Matutiae took his name; and his feast continued in the regional sanctoral cycle. Precise years of birth and death, and the details of his administration, remain unknown.
