Biography

Short Description

Saint Ronan of Locronan, known in Irish as Rónán, is a figure of early medieval Breton hagiography traditionally placed in the sixth century. Later medieval accounts present him as an Irishman of royal lineage who converted from paganism, was consecrated a bishop in Ireland, and then embraced the Irish ideal of peregrinatio pro Christo, leaving his homeland as a pilgrim-exile. No contemporary Irish or Breton source records his life. The principal narrative is a Latin vita composed in the thirteenth century, together with local folklore attached to the village of Locronan in Cornouaille (present-day Finistère). His episcopal status, diocese of origin, and precise dates cannot be independently verified.

Ronan is said to have landed on the western coast of Armorica and withdrawn into the forest of Névet, where he lived as a hermit. The Breton place-name Locronan (lok, a consecrated hermitage, plus Ronan) preserves that tradition. From his cell he preached to the surrounding population. Breton legend relates that a woman named Keban—variously a hostile local pagan or, in some folkloric versions, a wife left behind in Ireland—accused him of lycanthropy and of devouring children. The charge was brought before the legendary King Gradlon of Cornouaille at Quimper. Ronan was vindicated by miracle: a child supposed to have been eaten was produced alive or restored to life, and the hermit’s innocence was publicly established. These episodes belong to hagiography and folklore rather than to documented history.

After his death his body, according to a widespread hagiographical motif, was placed on a cart drawn by oxen that halted of their own accord at the site destined for his tomb, which became the nucleus of the later parish. The present Church of Saint-Ronan at Locronan, a Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance building of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, contains a recumbent effigy and remains the focus of his cult. Locronan developed as a pilgrimage centre. The distinctive local observance is the Troménie, a penitential circuit of the ancient sacred forest: a lesser Troménie annually and a Grande Troménie of some twelve kilometres every six years.

His feast is kept on 1 June in Breton and some Irish calendars. He is the patron saint of Locronan. The cult remained essentially local, though the village’s early-modern linen trade helped monumentalize the shrine. Historians treat the vita as a late compilation that weaves Irish peregrinus themes, Breton royal legend (Gradlon), and folkloric motifs (the werewolf accusation, the oxen miracle) around a possibly historical Irish hermit. He is not to be confused with other saints named Ronan or with Saint Renan of Léon.
