Biography

Short Description

Roque González de Santa Cruz was born in Asunción on 17 November 1576, in the Spanish colonial Governorate of the Río de la Plata. He was the son of Bartolomé González y de Villaverde, a Spanish-born official, and María de Santa Cruz. As a criollo of the first generations born in the city, he received a solid education and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Asunción in 1598. For about a decade he exercised his ministry in the colonial capital and among nearby indigenous groups, gaining a reputation for pastoral zeal and familiarity with the Guaraní language and customs.

In 1609 he entered the Society of Jesus, seeking a stricter religious life and a more systematic missionary apostolate. After completing his Jesuit formation he was sent to the missions that the order was establishing among the Guaraní. Over the following two decades he became one of the principal architects of the early Jesuit reductions. He founded or co-founded several settlements, including San Ignacio Guazú, the reduction of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Itapúa on the Paraná River, and other communities intended to gather indigenous people into Christian, economically self-sufficient towns that would shield them from enslavement by Portuguese bandeirantes and from the abuses of the encomienda system. He was noted for his administrative ability, his personal poverty, and his efforts to learn and use Guaraní in catechesis and daily life.

In November 1628 González established a new reduction dedicated to All Saints at Caaró, in the region of the Uruguay River basin that now lies in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The foundation provoked the hostility of the local cacique Ñezú, a shaman who regarded the missions as a threat to traditional authority, polygamy, and indigenous religious practices. On 15 November 1628, while González was preparing the altar of the newly built chapel, he was struck down with a macana. His fellow Jesuit Alonso Rodríguez was killed the same day. Two days later Juan del Castillo suffered a similar death at a nearby mission. The chapel was burned and the bodies initially left amid the ruins.

The three Jesuits were immediately regarded as martyrs by their brethren. Their cause advanced slowly; they were beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1934 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 16 May 1988 during an open-air Mass in Asunción. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 17 November. Roque González is venerated as the first canonized saint born in the territory of present-day Paraguay and as a symbol of the early evangelization of the Río de la Plata. He is invoked as a patron of Paraguay and of the missionary heritage of the Jesuit reductions, which later became famous for their social organization and for the cultural synthesis they attempted between European Christianity and Guaraní society.
