Biography
Rosa Francisca Dolors Molas Vallvé was born on 24 March 1815 in Reus, in the Catalan province of Tarragona, Spain, the daughter of José Molas and María Vallvé. She was baptized on the day of her birth in the parish church of Sant Pere Apòstol. Raised in a devout household of modest means, she showed from childhood a strong piety and a practical compassion for the poor and the sick. The death of her father left the family in reduced circumstances, and she helped support the household while continuing to give time to prayer and works of mercy among the needy of Reus.
In the 1840s she joined a group of women who nursed the sick in the hospital of Reus, an experience that confirmed her vocation to consecrated charitable service. Seeking a more stable religious life and a wider apostolate, she later moved with companions to Tortosa, where they worked in the municipal hospital and began to instruct poor girls. In 1857 she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation, placing the community under the patronage of Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted. The institute united care of the sick with the Christian education of children, especially girls from humble or abandoned families.
As foundress and first superior, she formed her sisters in humility, evangelical poverty, and trust in Divine Providence. She opened further houses in Catalonia, insisted that the sisters remain close to the poorest, and herself continued to nurse the ill, visit prisoners, and assist the marginalized, even when her health was fragile. She governed the young congregation through material hardship and occasional misunderstanding, emphasizing simplicity of life and charity. Rosa Molas Vallvé died in Tortosa on 11 June 1876.
Her reputation for holiness persisted among the people of Reus and Tortosa and among her spiritual daughters. Pope Paul VI beatified her on 1 May 1977. Pope John Paul II canonized her on 11 December 1988, presenting her as a model of service in education and health care. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 11 June. The congregation she founded continues its work of teaching and nursing in Spain and in many other countries.
