Biography

Short Description

Rosa Ojeda i Creus was a Catalan Roman Catholic religious sister and foundress of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She was born in 1871 in Castellterçol, a town in the Vallès Oriental of Catalonia, Spain, and she died in 1954 in Barcelona. She is known in Catalan and Spanish ecclesiastical historiography as the foundress of the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph (Germanes Carmelites de Sant Josep; Hermanas Carmelitas de San José), an institute of women religious that joined Carmelite spirituality to active works of charity, especially the care of the sick, the elderly, and children. Outside regional encyclopedias and congregational notices she remains an obscure figure; she does not appear in the General Roman Calendar, and readily available reliable sources do not record a beatification or canonization.

Raised in a Catholic setting in rural Catalonia during the Restoration period, she later lived and worked in Barcelona, then a rapidly industrializing city whose working-class districts faced poverty, illness, and inadequate home care for the sick. Drawn to the spirituality of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, she became associated with the Carmelite Third Order in the later 1890s. With a small group of companions she began to nurse the sick in their own homes. From that informal apostolate there grew a community placed under the patronage of Saint Joseph and shaped by Carmelite ideals of prayer and common life. The Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph took institutional form in Barcelona in the early twentieth century, with Ojeda i Creus as foundress and first superior.

She directed the congregation through its first decades, seeking ecclesiastical recognition and forming sisters for nursing, assistance to the aged and to children, and related charitable and educational work. The institute spread from its original Barcelona setting to other parts of Spain and, in later years, beyond Spain, while remaining dedicated to healthcare and social service. Its early history unfolded against Catalonia’s social conflicts, the Second Spanish Republic, the Civil War of 1936–1939—when many religious communities in Catalonia suffered violence and dispersal—and the Franco period that followed. Precise personal details of her experience in those years are not abundant in general sources, but the survival and continuity of her congregation through that era belong to its documented history.

Ojeda i Creus died in Barcelona in 1954 after more than half a century of religious life. Her historical importance lies less in a public cultus of sainthood, which has not been formally established in the universal Church according to verifiable general sources, than in the congregation she founded, which remains the principal living memorial of her work. Because she is little known outside specialist and Catalan congregational historiography, a number of particulars—including her burial place, a full chronology of canonical approvals, and any private writings—cannot be confirmed from widely available reliable accounts and are therefore omitted here. The outline above follows the main facts that standard Catalan biographical notices attach to her name: birth at Castellterçol in 1871, foundation of a Josephite Carmelite sisterhood in Barcelona in the early twentieth century, and death in that city in 1954.
