Biography

Short Description

Saint Rosalia (Italian Santa Rosalia; French Sainte Rosalie), popularly called La Santuzza, is venerated as the principal patron saint of Palermo in Sicily. Traditional accounts, which took written shape in the later Middle Ages and were greatly elaborated after 1624, present her as a daughter of the Norman nobility of Palermo, often naming her father as Sinibald, lord of Quisquina, and linking the family with the counts of the Marsi. Drawn to solitude, she is said to have left her family and the court, living first as a recluse in a cave in the Sicilian interior near Bivona or Quisquina and later in a grotto high on Monte Pellegrino, the mountain that dominates the bay of Palermo. There she is believed to have spent the remainder of her life in prayer and penance. No contemporary twelfth-century chronicle or charter has been shown to document these events, and historians therefore treat the narrative of her life as largely legendary, even while acknowledging that a local cult of a holy woman named Rosalia existed in Sicily by the later medieval centuries.

The cave on Monte Pellegrino became the focus of her memory. According to the tradition fixed in the seventeenth century, her remains lay hidden there until 1624, when Palermo was stricken by plague. A hunter (or, in some versions, a soap-boiler) was led by a vision of the saint to the grotto, where bones were found and identified as hers. Carried in procession through the city, the relics were credited with bringing the epidemic to an end. In gratitude the Senate of Palermo adopted Rosalia as the city’s patron, a sanctuary was constructed at the cave, and an annual civic-religious festival, the Festino di Santa Rosalia, was instituted in mid-July to commemorate the translation of the relics. The Roman liturgy keeps her feast on 4 September, the day traditionally assigned to her death; Palermo also observes 15 July.

Rosalia is typically represented as a young woman in a hermit’s habit or a simple tunic, often crowned with roses, holding a crucifix, a skull, or lilies, and sometimes shown recumbent in her cave. She is invoked against plague and pestilence. Beyond Palermo and Sicily she is honoured as patron in several communities of the Americas with Sicilian ties, notably Camargo in Chihuahua, Mexico, and certain towns in Venezuela including El Hatillo. She is inscribed in the Roman Martyrology. Her cult was never submitted to a formal process of canonization of the type that became standard after the Council of Trent; rather, it received recognition from the Holy See in the seventeenth century in the wake of the events of 1624. The Eastern Orthodox Church likewise commemorates her.

Precise years of birth and death cannot be verified from contemporary records. The figures 1130 and 1166, frequently repeated in popular and even some reference works, rest on later tradition and should not be treated as established historical dates. Likewise, claims that she belonged to a particular canonical religious order (Benedictine or otherwise) are not supported by early evidence; the sources present her as a hermit and consecrated virgin. Nothing reliable is known of any marriage or children, and the whole tenor of the tradition is that of a life of virginity and withdrawal from the world.
