Biography

Short Description

Isabel Flores de Oliva, known to history as Saint Rose of Lima, was born on 20 April 1586 in Lima, capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Her father, Gaspar Flores, was a Spanish arquebusier born in Puerto Rico; her mother, María de Oliva y Herrera, was a criolla of Lima. Baptized Isabel, she was called Rosa from childhood on account of her beauty—a name later confirmed when Archbishop Toribio de Mogrovejo administered the sacrament of confirmation. The family, of Spanish colonial standing but modest means, raised a large household. From an early age Rose showed an intense inclination to prayer, fasting, and solitude, modelling herself especially on Saint Catherine of Siena.

As she reached marriageable age her parents hoped to arrange a match that would ease the family’s circumstances, but Rose had already determined to remain a virgin consecrated to God. She cut her hair, disfigured her face with pepper and lye to discourage suitors, and refused all proposals. In the first decade of the seventeenth century she received the habit of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, remaining in her parents’ house as a lay tertiary rather than entering a cloister. In the family garden she built a small hut that served as cell and oratory. There she practised extreme austerities: a silver crown lined with spikes and concealed by roses, a bed strewn with stones and broken pottery, and severe fasting that permanently injured her health. These penances, which some contemporaries already judged excessive, were accompanied by reported visions, locutions, and periods of ecstatic prayer, including a mystical betrothal to Christ in the Dominican tradition of Catherine of Siena.

Alongside her hidden life of mortification, Rose undertook practical charity among the poor and sick of Lima. She converted a room of the family dwelling into an infirmary, nursing the destitute with her own hands and supporting the work by selling flowers, embroidery, and needlework. She was also known for intervening in household quarrels and for consoling those mocked for their piety. After a prolonged and painful illness, which she understood as a share in the Passion, she died in Lima on 24 August 1617 at the age of thirty-one. Large crowds attended her funeral; her remains were placed in the church of the Dominican convent of Santo Domingo in Lima, where they are still venerated.

Her reputation for holiness spread quickly through the Spanish Empire. She was beatified by Pope Clement IX in the late 1660s and canonized by Pope Clement X on 12 April 1671, becoming the first person born in the Americas to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church. Clement X named her patroness of Lima and of Peru; later papal acts extended her patronage to the Americas and the Philippines. In the twentieth-century reform of the General Roman Calendar her feast was fixed on 23 August. She remains among the most popular saints of Latin America, invoked as protector of Peru and the New World, of gardeners, florists, and embroiderers, and of those ridiculed for their faith, and her life continues to be read as a severe, if controversial, witness to contemplative prayer and solidarity with the poor in colonial South America.
