Biography

Short Description

The historical record concerning Rosine d’Augsbourg (Rosina of Augsburg) is extremely sparse. The name combines a Romance form of Rose/Rosina with the toponym Augsburg, the ancient Roman Augusta Vindelicorum in Bavaria. Neither the Martyrologium Hieronymianum nor the later martyrologies of Usuard, Ado, or the Roman Martyrology contain an entry that can be identified with certainty as this person. No reliable year of birth or death, family, or circumstances of life can therefore be established from primary sources.

Augsburg’s early Christian history is documented through other figures. In the Diocletianic period the city is associated with the martyr Saint Afra, whose passio was already known by the time of Venantius Fortunatus; later the diocese is represented by Saint Simpert and the tenth-century bishop Saint Ulrich. If a cult of Rosine existed, it appears to have been purely local, perhaps attached to an altar, relic, or church dedication that was later lost or absorbed. French-language references to “Rosine d’Augsbourg” may reflect a medieval or early-modern regional devotion that never entered the universal calendar.

Critical hagiography therefore treats the name with caution. Without a vita, without liturgical attestation in early sacramentaries or calendars, and without archaeological or documentary corroboration, it is impossible to determine whether the figure was a late-antique martyr, a medieval recluse, or a doublet of another saint whose name was altered in transmission. Claims of a specific feast day, patronage, or formal canonization cannot be verified from surviving sources.

In the absence of further evidence, Rosine d’Augsbourg remains an obscure name in the catalogue of holy persons linked to the churches of southern Germany. Serious historical work records the lack of information rather than constructing an unsubstantiated biography.
