Biography

Rozalia Celakówna was a Polish nurse and Catholic mystic of the first half of the twentieth century, known among devotees for her hidden life of prayer and for promoting the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a spiritual response to the moral and political crises of her age. She was born on 19 September 1901 in the village of Jachówka, in the Carpathian foothills of Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary and today in southern Poland. She grew up in a poor, devout peasant family as the eldest of several children and received only a modest elementary education. From an early age she was noted for piety, a spirit of penance, and a desire to serve God in ordinary, unobtrusive ways rather than in a convent.

In the 1920s she left her native village for Kraków, where she trained and worked as a nurse at the municipal St. Lazarus Hospital. She spent many years caring for patients in demanding wards, including those suffering from venereal diseases, and lived simply, often changing rented rooms. Colleagues and confessors later testified to her humility, obedience, and compassion toward the sick and the poor. Alongside her professional duties she maintained a rigorous life of prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments, Eucharistic devotion, and works of charity. She remained a laywoman and never married.

According to her diaries and the accounts of her spiritual directors, Celakówna experienced mystical graces, including interior locutions and visions of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The central theme of the messages she recorded was the call to enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in families and, in a public and official manner, in the Polish nation and other countries, as an act of recognition of Christ's social kingship and as a means of obtaining peace, conversion, and protection amid the threats of atheistic ideologies and war. She offered her own sufferings, including illness and the hardships of the German occupation of Poland during the Second World War, for these intentions.

Rozalia Celakówna died in Kraków on 13 September 1944, a few days before her forty-third birthday. She was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in that city. After her death her spiritual notes circulated among priests and laypeople interested in Sacred Heart devotion. The Archdiocese of Kraków opened a cause for her beatification, and she is honored with the title Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day has been assigned to her. Her memory is cultivated especially in Poland as an example of lay holiness, the nursing vocation, and intercessory prayer for the Church and the nation.
