Biography

Short Description

The personal name Rufino, a Romance form of Latin Rufinus, is borne by several distinct figures in Christian hagiography, especially in Italy and the western Mediterranean. The Wikidata identifier Q113671062 could not be matched with certainty to a single, well-documented historical individual from reliable sources available for verification. Early martyrologies and local calendars list more than one holy man of this name, and later legend frequently blended or duplicated their stories. In the absence of a securely identified subject, precise dates, places, offices, and family details cannot be supplied without speculation, which is refused here.

The best-known cult attached to the name is that of Rufinus, traditionally the first bishop of Assisi, presented in later sources as a third-century martyr who was put to death for refusing pagan sacrifice, often said to have been drowned in a local river. His relics were associated with the cathedral of San Rufino in Assisi, and he became that city's principal patron; the Roman Martyrology commemorates a Rufinus of Assisi on 11 August. Contemporary evidence for his life is lacking. Birth year, birthplace, family, and the exact circumstances of any episcopate are not preserved in sources that meet a historian's standard, and those legendary particulars are not assigned here to Q113671062.

Other martyrological entries concern figures such as Rufinus of Capua, Rufinus of Soissons, and various companions of other martyrs in Sicily and elsewhere, with feast days that vary by local calendar. The learned presbyter Tyrannius Rufinus of Aquileia, active in the late fourth and early fifth centuries as a translator of Origen, Eusebius, and other Greek works into Latin, is a historically well-attested person but is not generally counted among the canonized saints of the Roman calendar and must not be conflated with the Assisi martyr. None of these identifications can be confirmed for the given Wikidata item.

Accordingly this record leaves blank every field that would require a verified year of birth or death, a documented city or country of origin or death, a burial place, a religious order, a spouse, children, papal or patriarchal office, a feast day proper to this individual, a list of patronages, or the name of a pope or bishop who canonized or beatified him. The name Rufino is masculine in the linguistic traditions in which it occurs. No office-taking year has been substituted for a birth year, and no legendary detail has been presented as established fact.
