Biography

Short Description

The Latin personal name Rufinus was common among Christians of the later Roman Empire, and it was borne by a number of martyrs, bishops, and ascetics whose names entered medieval martyrologies. Wikidata item Q16693161 designates one such figure, but the identifier is not matched in the surviving narrative, epigraphic, or conciliar record to a life that can be dated and localized with historical confidence. Early Latin and Greek calendars often preserve little more than a name, a place of passion or burial, and a liturgical date. Several independent cults used the same name, and later passiones regularly filled those gaps with conventional scenes of interrogation, torture, and drowning or beheading under Decius, Valerian, or Maximian. Those literary expansions are not contemporary evidence and cannot be treated as a verified biography of this particular Rufinus.

Because of that homonymy, standard facts requested in a biographical template remain unknown. No reliable source supplies a year of birth distinct from an office-taking date, and no year of death can be fixed without arbitrarily choosing one of the competing local traditions. Place of birth, place of death, and burial are likewise unattested for this item. Nothing documents membership in a later canonical religious order, a marriage, or children. No Bishop of Rome and no Patriarch or Catholicos of the principal Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East sees bore the name Rufinus, so those offices can be excluded. Formal papal canonization and beatification do not apply to the mass of pre-congregation names in the martyrologies; where a cult existed, it rested on local veneration and eventual calendar entry, not on a named decree that can be cited here.

The principal better-documented homonyms illustrate why caution is required and why they are not being identified with Q16693161. Rufinus of Aquileia (Tyrannius Rufinus), the monk and translator of Eusebius and Origen, is a fourth- and early fifth-century literary figure with a relatively full dossier, including association with Concordia, Aquileia, the monasteries of Egypt and the Mount of Olives, and a death in Sicily; he is not this obscure calendar saint. The first bishop of Assisi venerated as San Rufino, whose relics were claimed for the cathedral of Assisi and whose feast is kept on 11 August, is known almost entirely from a legendary passio and from medieval translation accounts. The martyrs Valerius and Rufinus of the Soissons region, commemorated in June, belong to another Gallic tradition. African, Capuan, and other Italian notices of a Rufinus are similarly brief. None of these dossiers can be transferred to Q16693161 without circular use of the name alone.

In the present state of the evidence, therefore, this Rufinus can be described only as a male Christian of the late antique or early medieval commemorative tradition. Century, region, rank (layman, cleric, or bishop), and the manner of death are not recoverable from sources that meet a historical standard. Patronages of cities, crafts, or illnesses attached in later devotion to one or another Saint Rufinus cannot be listed here as facts about this item. The honest result of verification is a largely empty biographical record and a warning against conflating distinct cults that share a common Roman name.
