Biography

Short Description

Rufus of Metz is numbered among the early bishops of the church of Metz in Roman Gaul and is honoured as a saint in the Roman Martyrology. Almost no contemporary evidence survives concerning him. His name is preserved in later medieval catalogues of the bishops of Metz and in liturgical books that assign him a feast on 7 November. Those catalogues, compiled long after the fourth century, credit him with an episcopate of twenty-nine years and place his death around the year 400. Independent confirmation of these figures is lacking, and the early portion of the Metz episcopal list is regarded by historians as partly legendary. He should not be confused with other holy men of the same name, including the Rufus greeted by Saint Paul in the Epistle to the Romans, several early martyrs, and bishops of other sees.

Metz, the ancient Divodurum of the Mediomatrici, lay in the province of Belgica Prima and was a significant military and administrative centre on the Moselle. A Christian community existed there by the later Roman period, though the date of its foundation cannot be fixed with certainty. Later legend claimed an apostolic origin through Saint Clement of Metz, a claim typical of many Gallic sees that sought to enhance their prestige. By the fourth century the city would have possessed a bishop, clergy, and at least one church. If Rufus indeed governed the see in the closing decades of that century, his ministry would have coincided with the establishment of Nicene orthodoxy after the Arian controversies, the growing prestige of monasticism in Gaul, and the first signs of political instability on the Rhine frontier. No document, however, associates him with any council, letter, inscription, or public act.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 7 November with the simple notice of a bishop and confessor at Metz. The designation confessor indicates that tradition did not regard him as a martyr. No ancient passion, vita, or collection of miracles has been transmitted. His cult remained essentially local, maintained by the church of Metz and eventually received into the general martyrology of the Latin Church. He was not the subject of a formal process of canonization, an institution that developed only in the later Middle Ages; his sainthood rests on immemorial veneration rather than on a papal decree that can be named. No distinctive patronage, iconography, or shrine can be securely attached to him from reliable sources.

The absence of reliable biographical data is itself a historical fact of some importance. It illustrates how little can be known of many pastors who served the churches of Gaul between the peace of the Church and the collapse of imperial authority in the West. Place of birth, family, education, the manner of his election, the length of his actual tenure, and the circumstances of his death are all unrecorded. Even the traditional date of death, given as about 400, is a conventional approximation rather than a documented year. Rufus of Metz therefore remains a shadowy figure, known to us almost solely through the piety of later centuries that preserved his name in the calendar of saints.
