Biography

Short Description

Rupert of Salzburg, known also as Rupert of Worms, was a Frankish missionary bishop of the late Merovingian age, remembered as the apostle of Bavaria and as the founder of Salzburg. Surviving contemporary records are few; knowledge of his career depends largely on Salzburg tradition and on vitae written in the eighth and ninth centuries, which combine recollection of a real missionary with the conventions of saintly biography. Those accounts describe him as a member of the Frankish nobility, in some versions of royal blood, who held the bishopric of Worms before he was called to work in Bavaria. In the last years of the seventh century Duke Theodo of Bavaria, wishing to consolidate Christianity in his duchy, invited Rupert to preach to his people. Rupert travelled east from the Rhine into the Bavarian lands along the Danube and in the northern Alps.

He established himself at the ruined Roman town of Iuvavum, restored a church there, and gathered a community of clergy and monks. The settlement became known as Salzburg, a name linked to the salt of the nearby mountains; Rupert is credited with promoting the salt workings that later made the city prosperous. He founded the monastery of St. Peter, of which he was the first abbot, and a convent on the Nonnberg headed by Erentrude, whom tradition calls his kinswoman. From Salzburg he undertook missionary journeys, including activity near the former Roman centre of Lorch and in the lake country of the Salzkammergut. He organized pastoral care, baptized, and set the pattern of a Bavarian church allied to ducal power and to Frankish ecclesiastical custom. His foundations gave Salzburg a lasting monastic and episcopal character.

Tradition places his death at Salzburg on 27 March. The year is given as 718 in medieval martyrologies and in much Catholic historiography; a number of modern scholars prefer a date around 710. He was buried at St. Peter’s Abbey. In the later eighth century Bishop Virgil of Salzburg translated the relics, a translation commemorated locally on 24 September. The cult spread with the prestige of the Salzburg church, which in the late eighth century became an archbishopric under Arno, a successor in the see Rupert had planted. Rupert was venerated as a saint from the early Middle Ages without a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type, and is therefore counted among the pre-congregation saints.

He remains the principal patron of the city of Salzburg, of the State of Salzburg, and of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, and he is invoked as patron of salt miners. In art he appears as a bishop with a barrel of salt or a model of a church. Together with Saint Virgil and Saint Erentrude he belongs to the founding saints of the Salzburg church. Historians accept the outline of a Worms bishop who, at Theodo’s request, created a missionary centre at Iuvavum–Salzburg and died there in the early eighth century, while treating miraculous and genealogical elaborations in the later lives with caution.
