Biography

Short Description

Ruricius was a Gallo-Roman aristocrat and bishop of Limoges who lived in the fifth and early sixth centuries. He is known to historians primarily through a substantial collection of his letters, which survive as an important source for the social and ecclesiastical history of late antique Gaul. A member of the senatorial nobility, he belonged to a family that maintained its status and cultural traditions during the period when Roman imperial administration in the West was giving way to the kingdoms of the Visigoths and Franks.

Details of his early life remain obscure, and no precise year or place of birth can be established from surviving sources. He received a classical education, reflected in the literary style of his correspondence. Ruricius married Hiberia, a woman from a senatorial family of the Auvergne, and they had several children. Like many of his contemporaries among the Gallic aristocracy, he entered the clergy later in life. He became bishop of Limoges in the later fifth century, a position he held until his death.

During his episcopate Ruricius maintained an active correspondence with other leading figures of the Gallic church and aristocracy. Recipients and correspondents included Faustus of Riez and other bishops. The more than eighty surviving letters discuss friendship, literary matters, theology, recommendations, and the practical concerns of a bishop in a time of political change. They illustrate the continued vitality of Roman aristocratic networks and Christian culture in Aquitaine. Ruricius appears to have been involved in the building or patronage of churches in his diocese.

Ruricius died in the early sixth century. A subsequent bishop of Limoges also named Ruricius, who held the see in the mid-sixth century, may have been a descendant. The letter collection of Ruricius of Limoges has been edited and studied by modern scholars as evidence for the transition from Roman to medieval Gaul. Although information about any widespread cult is limited, he belongs to the group of Gallo-Roman bishops whose memory was preserved in local church tradition.
