Biography

Short Description

Rusticus of Narbonne was a fifth-century Gallo-Roman bishop and saint, known principally as Bishop of Narbonne in southern Gaul. Surviving sources do not record a precise year of birth. He is said to have been born either at Marseille or at Narbonne, and to have been the son of a bishop named Bonosus. As a young man he entered the monastic community of Lérins, the island abbey off the Provençal coast founded by Honoratus, which in the early fifth century was among the most influential centers of monastic and theological life in the Latin West.

After leaving Lérins he was ordained priest by Venerius, Bishop of Marseille. In 427 he was chosen Bishop of Narbonne, a metropolitan see in Gallia Narbonensis that had been affected by the political and religious upheavals of the period, including Visigothic settlement and the presence of Arian Christianity. During his long episcopate he undertook the rebuilding of the cathedral church of Narbonne after it had been destroyed by fire. An inscription dated 445 commemorates this reconstruction.

Rusticus corresponded with Pope Leo I (Leo the Great). In 458 or 459 the pope addressed to him a detailed letter answering a series of disciplinary and pastoral questions that Rusticus had submitted. The letter, preserved as Epistle 167 among Leo's works, treats of the reception of those who had lapsed, of marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics, of ordination, and of other matters of church order in a province living under Arian Visigothic rulers. The poet and bishop Sidonius Apollinaris later spoke of Rusticus with respect.

Rusticus died on 26 October 461 after more than three decades as bishop. He was venerated as a saint from an early period; his feast is observed on 26 October. He is sometimes called Rusticus the Confessor. No writings of his own are known to survive, and many details of his life remain unrecorded. His historical importance lies in his role as a metropolitan bishop who maintained communion with Rome and sought to uphold Catholic discipline in fifth-century southern Gaul.
