Biography

Short Description

Saint Saba the Goth, also known as Sabbas, Sabas, or Sava the Goth, was a Christian martyr of Gothic origin who suffered in the fourth century among the Tervingian Goths north of the Danube. Almost all that can be said of him with confidence derives from the Passion of Saint Saba the Goth, a narrative composed soon after his death and generally treated by modern historians as one of the more credible early martyr acts, because of its local detail and relative lack of miraculous elaboration. According to that account, Saba was a Goth by birth and a Christian living in an unnamed village in Tervingian territory, in the region that corresponds to parts of present-day Romania. He was put to death by drowning on 12 April 372, during a persecution of Christians associated with the Gothic ruler Athanaric.

The Passion presents Saba as a layman of humble condition, not a priest or monk. In the period around 369 to 372, Athanaric moved against Christians in his domains, a policy often interpreted as resistance to Roman cultural and religious influence. Officials and local nobles required villagers to eat meat sacrificed to the traditional gods. In Saba’s village, inhabitants, including some who were not Christian, tried to protect their Christian neighbors by hiding them or by offering ordinary food in place of sacrificial meat. Saba would not join in the deception. He declared himself a Christian and refused even the appearance of eating idol-offerings. His intransigence endangered the whole community, and the villagers expelled him for a time. He later returned to the same district.

A Gothic notable named Atharid, described as the son of Rothesteus, came with an armed following and seized Saba together with a priest called Sansala. Saba was stripped, beaten, and dragged through thorn bushes, yet he continued to refuse the sacrificial meat. Atharid then ordered his execution. A wooden beam was fastened to Saba’s neck and he was thrown into the river Musaeus, identified with the Buzău River, where he drowned. The Passion states that he was thirty-eight years old. Sansala was released. Christians of the locality recovered the body, which the text claims showed no corruption.

Junius Soranus, the Roman dux of Scythia Minor, obtained the relics and sent them into the Empire, to Cappadocia, where they were received by Basil of Caesarea. This translation placed the Gothic martyr within the Nicene church of Asia Minor and helped to spread his cult. Saba has been venerated as a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity. The Roman Martyrology keeps his feast on 12 April, the traditional date of the martyrdom; Eastern Orthodox usage often commemorates him on 15 April. He remains an important witness to the presence of Nicene Christianity among the Goths in the generation before the later, better-known conversions of Gothic groups, and his Passion is valued as a rare narrative of village life and persecution beyond the Roman frontier.
