Biography

Short Description

Pope Sabinian (Latin: Sabinianus) was bishop of Rome from September 604 until his death in February 606. The Liber Pontificalis, the principal early source for his biography, states that he was a Tuscan by origin, from the city of Blera (also called Bieda) in the region then known as Tuscia in central Italy. No reliable evidence survives for the year of his birth or for his family. He served the Roman church as a deacon and was sent by Pope Gregory I as apocrisiarius, the papal representative, to the imperial court at Constantinople. In that post during the 590s he represented Roman interests before the emperor at a time when Lombard pressure in Italy made Byzantine political and military support essential to the security of Rome and of the papacy.

Gregory the Great died in March 604. The Roman see then remained vacant for several months, a delay generally explained by the need to obtain imperial confirmation of the election from Constantinople, where Phocas had recently taken power. Sabinian was consecrated bishop of Rome in September 604. His pontificate lasted only about a year and a half and is thinly documented. A famine struck Rome in this period. Later tradition, contrasting him with the well-known charity of Gregory, accused Sabinian of selling grain from the papal storehouses rather than distributing it freely to the poor. The Liber Pontificalis itself is brief and not overtly hostile on this point; subsequent medieval writers were more critical. Modern historians treat the charge with caution, noting both the limited grain reserves available to the papal administration and the tendency of later authors to judge Sabinian unfavorably against a predecessor already regarded as a saint.

Few specific administrative or liturgical measures can be assigned to him with certainty. Some later accounts credited him with encouraging the ringing of church bells at the canonical hours, but that attribution cannot be firmly verified from seventh-century evidence. He carried out the ordinary work of ordination, creating priests, deacons, and bishops for the Roman church. No collection of his letters survives, unlike the large Registrum of Gregory I, and he is not known as a theological writer. His relations with the Byzantine court appear to have followed established protocol, including imperial recognition of his election.

Sabinian died in Rome on 22 February 606 and was buried in the basilica of St. Peter at the Vatican. A later story of uncertain reliability holds that popular resentment was strong enough that his funeral procession took an indirect route to avoid hostile crowds. He was not the object of a cult, was never canonized, and has no established feast day in the Roman calendar. His short reign has been remembered chiefly as an interval between Gregory the Great and the brief pontificate of Boniface III. The scarcity of contemporary records and the bias of later comparisons with Gregory make a full assessment of his character and policy difficult. What can be said with confidence is that he was a career cleric of the Roman church, experienced in diplomacy at Constantinople, who governed the see of Rome for a year and a half amid famine and political uncertainty.
