Biography

Short Description

Sabinus of Canosa (Italian: San Sabino di Canosa; also called Sabinus of Bari) was bishop of Canosa, the ancient Canusium, in Apulia in southern Italy during the sixth century. Later medieval and early modern hagiography assigns him a birth at Canosa in 461 and his consecration as bishop in 514, but those precise years rest on local tradition rather than on surviving contemporary records of his youth. What can be said with greater confidence is that a Bishop Sabinus of Canosa was an active prelate in the second quarter of the sixth century. He is recorded as having taken part in a synod convened at Rome in 531 by Pope Boniface II, which places him among the Italian bishops in communion with the Roman see during the Ostrogothic period. Pope Gregory the Great, writing the Dialogues toward the end of the same century, treats Sabinus as a well-known holy bishop of Canosa whose miracles were still recounted in Gregory’s own generation, thereby confirming both his historical existence and the early growth of his cult.

Tradition credits Sabinus with an energetic building programme in his diocese. He is associated with the construction or restoration of a church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian and with work on the cathedral church of Canosa, in a city that archaeology shows was an important early Christian centre with baptisteries and basilicas. He is also said to have travelled to Constantinople on church business, an embassy sometimes linked to the defence of orthodoxy or to papal diplomacy in the years surrounding the Gothic War and the Byzantine reconquest of Italy. In later life he became blind. Gregory the Great’s Dialogues preserve the story that an archdeacon, ambitious for the see, attempted to kill the aged bishop with a cup of poison; Sabinus, though sightless, recognized the treachery, invoked a blessing, drank the cup without injury, and the poisoner himself subsequently perished. This narrative, whatever its miraculous elaboration, became the defining episode of Sabinus’s medieval reputation and was repeated in martyrologies and local legend.

Later legend further describes Sabinus as a friend of Saint Benedict of Nursia, a pairing that cannot be verified from the earliest Benedictine sources but that illustrates how Apulian memory placed the bishop among the great Italian saints of the sixth century. According to the received chronology he died at Canosa on 9 February 566 and was buried in his own city. His grave became a focus of veneration. Over subsequent centuries relics attributed to him were safeguarded, divided, and translated, especially in the face of raids on the Apulian coast. The cathedral of Canosa di Puglia, dedicated to San Sabino, preserves his cult in a crypt tomb. The cathedral of Bari was originally under his patronage and only later, after the translation of the relics of Saint Nicholas in 1087, took Nicholas as its principal titular, while Sabinus remained a patron of the city and diocese. Relics and dedications also explain his patronage of Atripalda in Campania and of the towns of Furci and Torremaggiore.

Sabinus is honoured as a saint in the Catholic Church, with his principal feast on 9 February, the traditional date of his death. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult is of the pre-congregation kind, arising from episcopal and popular recognition in Apulia and confirmed by inclusion in martyrologies and by the testimony of Gregory the Great. Historical knowledge of his life remains modest: a named bishop at a Roman synod, a figure in Gregory’s miracle stories, and a local founder-saint around whom building legends, relic translations, and civic patronage accumulated. Within those limits he stands as one of the better-attested episcopal saints of sixth-century southern Italy, and his name continues to mark the religious identity of Canosa and of several other communities in the Mezzogiorno.
