Biography

Short Description

Saint Sabinus of Piacenza, known in Italian as San Savino, was bishop of Piacenza (the Roman Placentia) in Emilia during the later fourth and early fifth centuries. No contemporary source records his parentage, place of birth, or year of birth, and his early life remains unknown. He first appears in securely dated evidence as a member of the circle of Ambrose of Milan, the leading Nicene bishop of northern Italy. Ambrose addressed him as a trusted colleague, dedicated to him the treatises De fide, De Spiritu Sancto, and De incarnationis dominicae sacramento, and asked him to review other writings before they circulated. That literary relationship, attested in Ambrose’s own prefaces and letters, is the principal reason Sabinus is known as a theologian and not merely as a name in episcopal lists.

In 381 Sabinus sat among the bishops at the Council of Aquileia. That assembly, steered by Ambrose, examined and deposed the Illyrian bishops Palladius of Ratiaria and Secundianus of Singidunum for Arian teaching. The synodal acts and related correspondence show Sabinus aligned with the Homoousian party then consolidating its hold on the Italian episcopate after the death of the Arian-leaning emperor Valens. Paulinus of Milan, in his Life of Ambrose, and the surviving letters of Ambrose further document continued contact between Milan and Piacenza in the 380s and 390s, including discussion of doctrine, church discipline, and the reception of Eastern controversies in the West.

Sabinus’s own episcopal acts at Piacenza are poorly documented. Later local tradition credited him with pastoral care of the city during a period of imperial and Gothic pressure on the Po valley and with churches that would bear his name. He is generally held to have died in 420, though the precise day is not given in the earliest calendars. He was buried at Piacenza; in the early Middle Ages a church dedicated to him rose over or near his tomb. That church, rebuilt in the tenth and eleventh centuries, survives as the Basilica of San Savino, a major Romanesque monument of the city, and has long been regarded as the shrine of his relics. Devotion to him remained essentially local. Because several Italian saints bore the name Sabinus—including a third-century martyr associated with Spoleto and Assisi and a sixth-century bishop of Canosa mentioned by Gregory the Great—medieval legendaries sometimes mixed their stories, attributing to the bishop of Piacenza miracles that belong to other figures. Critical hagiography therefore distinguishes the historically attested friend of Ambrose from these later or separate cults.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates Sabinus of Piacenza on 11 January, describing him as a bishop and friend of Saint Ambrose. He was not canonized by a formal papal process of the kind used after the twelfth century; his sainthood rests on ancient episcopal cult and inclusion in martyrologies. He is venerated above all in Piacenza, where the basilica that bears his name and the diocesan calendar preserve his memory. No reliable evidence records a wife or children, membership in a religious order, or any office beyond the see of Piacenza.
