Biography

Short Description

Sabinus of Spoleto (also known as Savinus or Savino) is remembered in Latin hagiography as a bishop of Assisi in Umbria who was martyred at Spoleto during the Great Persecution under Diocletian and Maximian. No contemporary administrative record, inscription, or eyewitness account of his life survives. What is known of him comes from later passiones and from the liturgical tradition of the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates him with his companions at Spoleto on 7 December. Modern historians treat the narrative details as legendary in large part, while accepting that an early local cult of a bishop-martyr of this name existed in Umbria and that his feast entered the wider Roman calendar.

According to the traditional acts, Sabinus was arrested at Assisi together with his deacons Marcellus and Exuperantius. They were brought before a governor named Venustianus and ordered to sacrifice to the gods, in particular to a statue of Jupiter. Sabinus refused. The governor is said to have had the bishop’s hands cut off; the deacons were tortured and put to death. While Sabinus remained in custody, Venustianus reportedly suffered a grave disease of the eyes. The imprisoned bishop healed him, after which the governor, his wife, and two sons converted to Christianity and were themselves executed. Sabinus was then taken to Spoleto and beaten to death with rods or clubs. These events are conventionally placed at the beginning of the Diocletianic persecution, about the year 303.

A Christian woman named Serena is said in the legend to have buried the martyr near Spoleto, and a church later rose over or near the tomb. Relics attributed to Sabinus were claimed in subsequent centuries not only at Spoleto but also at Assisi, Fermo, and other towns of Umbria and the Marche; the history of these translations is obscure and is complicated by the existence of several Italian saints of the same name, including Sabinus of Piacenza and Sabinus of Canosa. The Roman Martyrology’s entry for 7 December remains the principal official witness to the cult: it locates the martyrdom at Spoleto and groups Sabinus with unnamed companions.

Because the surviving acts are late, stylized, and rich in stock miracle motifs—the amputated hands, the healing of the persecutor’s sight, the conversion of the governor’s household—they cannot be used as a straightforward biography. What can be said with more caution is that a bishop identified with Assisi was remembered as having suffered mutilation and death rather than apostasy, that Spoleto was the centre of his martyr cult, and that his veneration is of the ancient, so-called pre-congregation type, never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind. He is not known to have belonged to a religious order, and nothing reliable is recorded of his birth, family, or early career.
