Biography

Short Description

Saint Sacerdos of Lyon was a sixth-century Gallo-Roman bishop who held the metropolitan see of Lyon in the middle of the Merovingian period. He belonged to the senatorial aristocracy of late antique Gaul, the class that continued to furnish many of the principal bishops of the Frankish kingdoms. His father was Saint Rusticus, who had occupied the see of Lyon in the late fifth and early sixth centuries, and his mother is remembered in the tradition as Saint Artemia. Through this lineage he belonged to an episcopal dynasty typical of the leading churches of the Rhône valley. He was also the uncle of Saint Nicetius of Lyon, who succeeded him in the same see. Precise records of his birth do not survive; later notices that place it around the 480s are conventional reconstructions rather than contemporary testimony, and the exact place of his birth is not securely attested, though his family was established at Lyon.

Before his elevation Sacerdos lived as a married layman of aristocratic rank. Historical tradition identifies him as the father of Saint Aurelian, who became archbishop of Arles and died in 551, shortly before Sacerdos himself. The existence of this son indicates that Sacerdos had a spouse, although her name is not preserved in the sources that have come down to us. In sixth-century Gaul it was still possible for a man who had been married to be chosen bishop, even as monastic and celibate candidates were increasingly preferred. Sacerdos was raised to the church of Lyon around 544, becoming metropolitan of one of the oldest sees in Gaul, a community that traced its origins to the martyrs of 177 and to Saint Irenaeus. Lyon’s metropolitan rank gave him a recognized place among the leading bishops of the Frankish realm.

As archbishop he took part in the conciliar life of the Frankish church. He is associated with the Fifth Council of Orléans in 549, held under King Childebert I, which issued canons on episcopal elections, church property, the care of lepers, and doctrinal discipline. The principal near-contemporary witness to this episcopal milieu is Gregory of Tours, writing a generation later, whose historical and hagiographical works preserve the names and family connections of the Lyonnais bishops to whom Sacerdos belonged. Sacerdos appears as a figure of standing both in his own city and in relation to the royal court, consistent with the political role of sixth-century metropolitans.

He died in Paris in 552, away from his see, according to the tradition that dates his death to 11 September of that year. His body was brought back to Lyon and buried in the basilica of the Holy Apostles, later known as the church of Saint-Nizier, which became the centre of his local cult. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 12 September as bishop of Lyon. He was venerated as a saint by early episcopal and popular cult rather than by a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. No reliable list of specific patronages is attached to his name in the historical record. What can be said with confidence is that he was a Gallo-Roman aristocrat, a married father who entered the episcopate, metropolitan of Lyon in the 540s, and a saint whose memory was kept at Lyon and entered the wider Latin martyrology.
