Biography

Short Description

Saint Sacerdos of Limoges, also known as Sacerdos of Calviac and in French sources under the variant names Sadroc, Sardot, Serdon, and Serdot, is a saint of the Latin Church associated with the Limousin and Périgord regions of what is now southwestern France. Traditional hagiography, which is late and not supported by contemporary eighth-century documents, places his birth in the later seventh century at Calviac in Périgord (the present commune of Calviac-en-Périgord in the Dordogne). He is said to have belonged to a local noble family. His mother, venerated as Saint Mundana (Mondane), belongs to the same regional cult; after widowhood she is described as having lived as a recluse, and the nearby commune of Sainte-Mondane preserves her name. No reliable contemporary record of Sacerdos’s parentage or early years survives, and the dates commonly repeated in modern notices (circa 670 to 720) are conventional approximations rather than archival facts.

According to the received legend, Sacerdos first lived as a hermit and then established a monastery at Calviac, of which he became abbot. He was later chosen bishop of Limoges. Episcopal catalogues for Limoges in the late Merovingian and early Carolingian period are incomplete, so his place in the historical succession of that see cannot be confirmed from independent lists, but local liturgical tradition has long numbered him among the bishops of Limoges. After a period in office he is said to have withdrawn again to his monastery at Calviac, where tradition places his death in the early eighth century. The vita does not supply a securely documented chronology.

After his death he was buried at Calviac. In later centuries his relics were translated to Sarlat, where the former Benedictine abbey church—raised to cathedral status when the Diocese of Sarlat was created in 1317—bears his name (Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat). He became the patron saint of Sarlat-la-Canéda and of that medieval diocese. Several place-names in southwestern France, including Saint-Sardos, are commonly linked to his cult. His feast is kept on 5 May. He was recognized as a saint by popular and episcopal cult in the era before the formal papal canonization process.

Little can be said with historical certainty beyond the existence of a regional cult of a holy bishop-abbot named Sacerdos, centered on Calviac and later on Sarlat. He should not be confused with the better-documented sixth-century Saint Sacerdos of Lyon, bishop of Lyon, who belongs to a different century and see. The Limoges and Calviac tradition remains that of an obscure Merovingian or early Carolingian monastic bishop whose memory was preserved in Aquitanian hagiography and in the dedications of Sarlat.
