Biography

Short Description

Saint Sacerdos of Lyon, whose name also appears in medieval sources as Sardot or Serdot, was a Gallo-Roman prelate of the sixth century and bishop of the metropolitan see of Lyon. He came from a senatorial family established in the Lyon region, a social milieu that supplied many of the bishops of Merovingian Gaul. Through his sister he was the uncle of Saint Nicetius (known in French as Saint Nizier), who later succeeded him as bishop of Lyon and whose career is better documented in the writings of Gregory of Tours. Later tradition assigns Sacerdos a birth at Lyon near the end of the fifth century, but no contemporary text records the year or circumstances of his birth, and the details of his youth and education remain unknown.

Sacerdos is securely attested as bishop of Lyon by the year 549, when he took part in the Fifth Council of Orléans. That assembly, convened under the Merovingian kings, issued canons on clerical discipline, the right of asylum, the protection of church property, and the condemnation of simony and related abuses. As metropolitan of Lyon he stood in a line of bishops who claimed a special dignity in the Gallic church, rooted in the second-century mission associated with Pothinus and Irenaeus and in Lyon’s ancient rank among the cities of Gaul. His episcopate coincided with the reign of Childebert I, king of Paris, who held the bishop in esteem. The closeness of that relationship is shown by Sacerdos’s presence at the royal court in the last period of his life.

He died at Paris in 552, after a relatively short tenure of the see. His body was brought back to Lyon and buried in the basilica of the Holy Apostles, a church that in later centuries was known as Saint-Nizier in honor of his nephew and successor. Nicetius became bishop of Lyon in the same year and governed the diocese for about two decades, preserving the family’s association with the church of Lyon. The succession and the burial arrangements indicate the standing of Sacerdos’s kindred among the aristocracy of the Rhône valley.

Veneration of Sacerdos as a saint grew from the local cult of the bishops of Lyon rather than from a later papal canonization. He is commemorated on 12 September in the Roman Martyrology, which records him as bishop of Lyon in Gaul. Beyond the conciliar subscription, the notice of his death, and the kinship with Nicetius, the written record is thin. No sermons, letters, or contemporary vita survive, and later liturgical and hagiographical notices add little that can be independently verified. He remains a representative figure of the senatorial episcopate of sixth-century Gaul: a man of high birth, trusted at court, briefly occupying one of the foremost sees of the Frankish kingdoms, and remembered by his church as a holy bishop.
