Biography

Short Description

Safta Brâncoveanu was born in 1776 as Safta Balș, a member of the Balș family of Moldavian boyars, one of the leading aristocratic houses of the Principality of Moldavia. In the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries she married Grigore Brâncoveanu, a Wallachian great ban and the last male-line descendant of the princely Brâncoveanu family, whose ancestor Constantin Brâncoveanu, prince of Wallachia, had been executed in Constantinople in 1714 together with his sons. By this marriage she settled in Bucharest and became associated with the palaces, estates, and Orthodox patronage that still attached to the Brâncoveanu name in Wallachia. Romanian sources often remember her as Lady Safta.

The marriage produced no biological children. Grigore Brâncoveanu adopted Zoe, born into the Mavrocordat family, so that the Brâncoveanu name and a portion of the family inheritance might continue; Zoe later married Gheorghe Bibescu, who reigned as prince of Wallachia in the 1840s. Grigore died in 1832, leaving Safta a widow in control of substantial wealth. In an era when Wallachian boyar widows frequently founded churches, almshouses, or schools, she chose to create a large urban hospital as her principal work of charity.

During the 1830s she established the Brâncovenesc Hospital in Bucharest, granting it land, buildings, and endowed revenues drawn from the family fortune. The institution, which began to function toward the end of that decade, was intended especially for the care of the poor and became one of the most important medical centers in the Romanian principalities. A church belonged to the hospital complex, in keeping with Orthodox practice and with the founder’s own piety. Through her will and the rules she set down, she tried to secure the hospital’s charitable purpose beyond her lifetime. She died in Bucharest in 1857, two years before the union of Moldavia and Wallachia.

Safta Brâncoveanu has not been canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church and has no liturgical feast, but she is remembered as a major lay benefactor of Christian charity in nineteenth-century Wallachia. The Brâncovenesc Hospital operated for roughly a century and a half and occupied a prominent place in the medical history of Bucharest until the historic buildings were demolished in the 1980s during the communist reconstruction of the city center. Her foundation remains the principal reason she is known to historians, physicians, and the wider Romanian public.
