Biography

Short Description

Sagaris, sometimes rendered Sagarius in later Latin sources, was bishop of Laodicea in Phrygia, in the Roman province of Asia, during the second century. Nearly everything that can be said of him with historical confidence comes from a letter of Polycrates, bishop of Ephesus, written to Pope Victor I of Rome about the year 190 and preserved by Eusebius of Caesarea in the fifth book of the Ecclesiastical History. In the course of the Quartodeciman controversy over the date of Easter, Polycrates appealed to the memory of distinguished Asian Christians who had already died and who, he claimed, had kept the fourteenth of Nisan. After naming Philip the apostle and his daughters, John who had reclined on the Lord’s breast, Polycarp of Smyrna, and Thraseas of Eumenia, he asked why he need mention the bishop and martyr Sagaris who fell asleep in Laodicea, together with Papirius and Melito of Sardis.

That testimony fixes several points and rules out others. Sagaris was bishop of Laodicea; he was remembered as a martyr; he died in Laodicea itself; and Polycrates placed him in the same generation as Polycarp and Melito, that is, among mid-second-century leaders of the churches of Asia rather than among first-century apostolic disciples. Later Western martyrologies sometimes described him as a disciple of the apostle Paul, a notice that would push him back into the first century and that conflicts with the company in which Polycrates names him. No acts of his passion, no imperial document, and no contemporary chronological notice survive. Western tradition often assigned his death to 166, in the reign of Marcus Aurelius, but that year is a later inference, not a date recorded by Polycrates or Eusebius.

Laodicea on the Lycus, near modern Denizli in western Turkey, was already a notable Christian community in the first century, addressed in the Epistle to the Colossians and in the Book of Revelation. By Sagaris’s time it possessed an episcopal see. Nothing is known of his birth, family, education, or the length of his episcopate. Whether he was married, as remained possible for bishops in the second century, or lived in continence is unrecorded. His burial place is not identified in the extant sources. His memory was preserved in Asia as that of a confessor who had died for the faith, and it was cited by Polycrates as part of the authoritative tradition of the Asian churches in their dispute with Rome over Easter.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 6 October as bishop and martyr at Laodicea in Phrygia, explicitly recalling Polycrates’ witness. He does not appear to have acquired a developed medieval cult with assigned patronages, miracle collections, or a tomb that became a major pilgrimage site. No later papal act of canonization or beatification is recorded; his veneration belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational recognition of martyrs. His historical importance lies chiefly in that second-century Asian testimony, which documents a named bishop-martyr at Laodicea and illustrates the network of churches that claimed continuity with apostolic practice in the province of Asia.
