Biography

Short Description

Saint Alban is honoured as the protomartyr of Britain, the earliest Christian in the Roman province of Britannia whose name and death for the faith are recorded in surviving tradition. No contemporary Roman document mentions him, and the year of his birth is entirely unknown. The chief narrative of his martyrdom is preserved in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written in the early eighth century, which in turn relied on earlier British and Gallic sources. Gildas, writing in the sixth century, already named Alban among the martyrs of Britain. Proposed dates for the martyrdom have ranged from the reign of Septimius Severus in the early third century through the Decian persecution to the Great Persecution under Diocletian at the beginning of the fourth century; Bede associated the event with Diocletian, but modern historians treat any precise year as unproven.

According to the received story, Alban was a pagan resident of the Roman city of Verulamium, on the site of present-day St Albans in Hertfordshire. During a persecution he gave refuge in his house to a Christian priest who was fleeing arrest. The priest’s life of prayer and fasting so impressed Alban that he received instruction and was baptized. When imperial officers came to search the house, Alban put on the cleric’s garment and surrendered himself in the priest’s stead. The unnamed priest of the earliest accounts was later given the name Amphibalus in medieval legend; that name and many accompanying details belong to later literary elaboration rather than to the oldest stratum of the tradition.

Brought before a judge, Alban refused to recant or to sacrifice to the gods of Rome. Asked who he was, he declared that he was called Alban and that he worshipped and adored the true and living God who created all things. He was scourged and then sentenced to beheading. Hagiographical accounts of the procession to the execution ground describe a series of miracles: the river that blocked the path (identified with the River Ver) dried up or parted so that the martyr and the crowd could cross dry-shod; a spring of water appeared on the hillside; the first executioner threw down his sword, professed Christianity, and was himself put to death; the man who finally struck off Alban’s head was said to have lost his eyes. These wonder-stories, characteristic of late antique passion literature, cannot be confirmed as historical fact, but they became integral to the medieval cult.

Alban was executed on a hill outside Verulamium, a site later occupied by the monastic church. A basilica already stood over the grave when Germanus of Auxerre visited the shrine in 429, an episode recorded by Constantius of Lyon; the visit demonstrates that veneration of Alban was established well before the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons. In the late eighth century King Offa of Mercia is traditionally credited with founding a Benedictine abbey at the place of martyrdom. The great Norman church that succeeded the Saxon monastery is now St Albans Cathedral; a reconstructed shrine of the saint stands in the retrochoir. Relics were dispersed at the Reformation, and later claims concerning bones or other remains remain historically uncertain.

Alban’s feast is observed on 22 June in the Roman Martyrology, the Church of England, and a number of other Western and some Eastern calendars. He is invoked as patron of the city of St Albans, of converts to Christianity, of refugees, and of those who suffer torture. Although the precise chronology of his life and death cannot be recovered, the core of the tradition—a British layman who died after sheltering a priest and refusing to apostatize—fits the pattern of sporadic persecution in the western provinces of the later Roman Empire and has been continuously commemorated in Britain from late antiquity to the present.
