Biography

Saint Baudolino was an eighth-century Christian hermit associated with Forum Fulvii, the present-day Villa del Foro, a settlement in the floodplain of the river Tanaro in what is now the province of Alessandria in Piedmont, northwestern Italy. During his lifetime the region belonged to the Lombard kingdom. No contemporary charter, chronicle, or inscription mentions him; knowledge of his life depends on later medieval hagiography and on the evidence of a local cult. Tradition holds that he came from a noble family and that he withdrew from secular society to live as a hermit in the woods near his native place. Modern historical scholarship regards the personal details of this tradition as legendary.

The surviving legends ascribe to Baudolino a series of miracles typical of early medieval Italian hermit saints. He is said to have made a spring of water appear, to have saved a drowning man from the Tanaro, and to have exercised prophetic gifts, among them a foretelling of the death of the Lombard king Liutprand. Such stories cannot be verified from independent sources, but they established his reputation as a protector of the rural communities of the Alessandrian countryside and as a holy man whose prayers were effective in times of danger.

Baudolino was buried at Forum Fulvii, and a cult developed at his tomb. When the communes of the Lombard League founded the city of Alessandria in 1168 as a fortress against the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, they adopted the local hermit as the patron of the new settlement. This act of patronage tied the twelfth-century civic identity of Alessandria to an older, territorially rooted sanctity. In subsequent centuries his relics were translated from Villa del Foro into the city; they are now kept in the cathedral of Alessandria. Churches and chapels dedicated to him, together with later artistic representations, attest to the continuity of the civic cult.

Devotion to Saint Baudolino has always been primarily local. His feast is kept on 10 November. He is the patron saint of Alessandria and of its diocese. Beyond Piedmont he remains an obscure figure, and the historical individual behind the legend cannot be reconstructed with any certainty. The name Baudolino nevertheless persisted in the region. In 2000 the novelist Umberto Eco, himself a native of Alessandria, gave the name to the wandering protagonist of his historical novel, thereby introducing the medieval patron of his city to a much wider literary audience.
