Biography

Short Description

Saint Cecilia, known in Latin as Caecilia and commonly called Cecilia of Rome, is among the most widely venerated virgin martyrs of the early Christian Church. She is commemorated in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican Communion, and some Lutheran bodies, and her name appears in the Communicantes of the Roman Canon, a mark of the antiquity and prestige of her cult in the city of Rome. Notwithstanding this liturgical prominence, the historical facts of her life remain extremely obscure. Modern scholars generally date the principal hagiographical source, the Passio Sanctae Caeciliae, to the fifth century and treat it as a work of pious legend rather than as a reliable contemporary record. The Passio may preserve a faint memory of a Roman Christian woman named Cecilia who was martyred, but it cannot be used to reconstruct a precise biography. Traditional estimates have placed her martyrdom in the second or third century, often in connection with Pope Urban I, who reigned from 222 to 230 and who figures in the narrative as the bishop who baptized her husband; that chronological link, however, is itself part of the legendary texture and is not independently confirmed.

According to the Passio, Cecilia belonged to a senatorial family in Rome and had from an early age dedicated her virginity to God, wearing a hair shirt beneath her clothing and committing herself to prayer and fasting. Her family nonetheless arranged her marriage to a pagan youth named Valerian. During the wedding festivities, as instruments sounded, she is said to have sung inwardly to Christ, asking that her heart and body remain unsullied; this episode, more than any other, later made her the emblematic saint of music. On the wedding night she informed Valerian that an angel of God watched over her and would punish him if he violated her vow, but that he would be permitted to see the angel if he received baptism. Valerian went to Pope Urban, who was then living among the tombs of the martyrs on the Appian Way, and was baptized. Returning home, he found Cecilia at prayer and saw the angel, who crowned both spouses with wreaths of roses and lilies. Valerian’s brother Tiburtius was converted by the same means. The two brothers thereafter occupied themselves with charitable works and with the burial of Christians who had been put to death, until they were arrested, tried before the prefect Turcius Almachius, and executed. A fellow officer named Maximus, converted by their example, was martyred with them. Cecilia then had their bodies interred and was herself summoned before Almachius. After a defiant interrogation she was condemned.

The prefect first ordered that she be suffocated in the caldarium, the hot room of the baths attached to her house; she remained there a day and a night without harm. Almachius then sent an executioner to behead her. The man struck three blows, the maximum allowed by law, but failed to cut off the head. Cecilia survived for three days, during which she continued to instruct converts, to distribute her goods to the poor, and to commend her house to the Church as a place of worship. She was buried in the Catacomb of Callixtus on the Appian Way, in a crypt near the papal tombs, a location that later tradition identified with her. A church in Trastevere, the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, was established on property associated with her family and came to be regarded as standing over her house; archaeological work has confirmed the presence of Roman residential structures beneath the present basilica.

The subsequent history of her relics and cult is better documented than her life. In 821 Pope Paschal I, according to the Liber Pontificalis and his own inscriptions, searched for her body, was guided by a vision, and translated the remains from the catacombs to Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, placing them under the high altar together with relics of Valerian, Tiburtius, and Maximus. In 1599 Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrati, restoring the church, opened the sarcophagus and reported that the body was found intact, dressed in a golden robe, with cloth at the neck concealing the wounds, lying on the right side with the face turned down. The sculptor Stefano Maderno was commissioned to carve a marble figure recording this appearance; the statue, placed before the altar, became one of the most famous images of a martyr in Baroque Rome. Cecilia’s association with music, already suggested by the wedding scene in the Passio, was greatly elaborated from the late Middle Ages onward. She was depicted with portative organs, lutes, viols, and choirs of angels, and she became the patron of musicians’ guilds, of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and of countless choirs and conservatories. Composers including Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Charles Gounod, and Benjamin Britten wrote odes and masses in her honor. Her feast day is 22 November. She is invoked as patron of music, musicians, composers, singers, poets, and makers of musical instruments, and she is also honored as patron of the French city of Albi, whose cathedral is dedicated to her, and of the Archdiocese of Omaha. While historians continue to distinguish sharply between the fifth-century legend and the slender historical residue, her figure has remained a central presence in Christian art, liturgy, and musical culture for more than a millennium and a half.
