Biography

Short Description

Saint Colman, also known as Coloman or Colomannus of Stockerau, was an Irish Christian pilgrim of the early eleventh century who was put to death in the eastern Bavarian march, in what is now Lower Austria. Nothing reliable is known of the date or place of his birth, his family, or his early years. Later medieval legends composed at Melk and elsewhere claimed that he was of Irish royal blood, but these assertions have no contemporary support and belong to a familiar hagiographical pattern of ennobling an otherwise obscure holy man. He enters the historical record only as a Scotus—an Irishman—traveling the road of peregrinatio, the voluntary exile for Christ that drew many Irish monks and lay pilgrims across the Continent toward Rome and Jerusalem.

In 1012 he was passing through the Danube valley when he was arrested at the market settlement of Stockerau, northwest of Vienna. The region was a restless frontier of the Holy Roman Empire, subject to raids and political tension with neighboring Moravians and Magyars, and strangers were readily suspected of espionage. Colman spoke no German and wore distinctive Irish dress; he could not explain himself to his captors. After interrogation and torture he was hanged from a tree or a gallows on 17 October 1012. Because he died while on pilgrimage and under an unjust accusation, the Church numbered him among the martyrs.

Miracles were quickly reported at the place of execution. The dead tree was said to have put forth green shoots, and the body was described as remaining incorrupt. These signs prompted local veneration. In 1014 the relics were translated from Stockerau to the Benedictine monastery of Melk, which became the principal centre of his cult and the burial place of his shrine. A vita was written, further miracles were recorded, and Colman was adopted as a heavenly protector by the Babenberg margraves. His liturgical feast was observed on 13 October.

Melk Abbey remained a pilgrimage destination through the High and Late Middle Ages and was rebuilt on a grand Baroque scale in the eighteenth century, giving the saint a setting that still exists. He is honoured as a patron of Austria and of the town of Stockerau, and popular devotion has long invoked him for travellers and for the protection of farm animals. Modern historians accept the core facts—an Irish pilgrim hanged at Stockerau in 1012 and immediately venerated at Melk—while treating the royal genealogy and many miracle stories as later legendary growth. His cult, which appears in the Roman Martyrology, rests on continuous local and dynastic veneration from the eleventh century rather than on a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type.
