Biography

Short Description

Saint Congar, known in Welsh as Cyngar and in Latin sources as Concarius or Cungarus, is an early medieval Christian saint of Britain, customarily assigned to the sixth century. He is the eponymous patron of Congresbury in Somerset, a place-name usually explained as Congar's burh or fortified place, and later tradition also links him with Welsh church dedications at Llangefni on Anglesey and Hope in Flintshire. No contemporary chronicle, charter, or inscription records his life. What passes for biography derives chiefly from the Vita Sancti Cungari, a Latin hagiographical text written long after the period in which he is supposed to have lived, often dated to the twelfth century, and judged by modern historians to be legendary rather than documentary. That Life, together with place-names, church dedications, and liturgical calendars, is the principal basis of his cult.

In the medieval narrative Congar is portrayed as a man of royal British stock who abandoned a secular or princely career for the monastic life. He is variously described as connected with the rulers of Dumnonia or with other western British dynasties, and some versions of the legend even attach him, anachronistically, to the emperor Constantine. He is said to have settled as a hermit in Somerset, to have received a grant of land from a king, and to have founded a monastery at what became Congresbury. Later writers also credit him with activity in Wales and sometimes identify him with Saint Cyngar of Llangefni. Details such as a land grant from King Ine of Wessex, who reigned in the late seventh and early eighth centuries, show that the written legend cannot be treated as a reliable chronology. Whether the Somerset abbot and the several Welsh saints named Cyngar were one person or more than one remains an open question in scholarship.

Congresbury possessed a minster church in the later Anglo-Saxon period, and a shrine of Saint Congar was maintained there in the Middle Ages. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Andrew, was the centre of this local cult; relics associated with Congar were claimed at Congresbury, and some accounts speak of a translation of his body after a death on pilgrimage in Jerusalem, while others imply that he was buried at his own foundation. Neither the year nor the place of his death can be verified from independent evidence, nor can a year of birth. English liturgical tradition connected with Congresbury keeps his feast on 27 November; Welsh and other martyrologies record saints named Cyngar or Congar on additional dates, including 7 November and 10 November, which likely reflect distinct or conflated cults. He was venerated as a monastic founder and abbot of the Celtic British church, not as a pope or patriarch, and he belonged to no later religious order such as the Benedictines. Like other saints of his age, he was honoured by local cultus long before the development of papal canonization; his sainthood is therefore classed as pre-congregation.

Beyond the legend, the most secure historical traces of Congar are toponymic and cultic: the name of Congresbury, dedications in Somerset and Wales, and medieval commemoration of his feast and shrine. He belongs to the large company of poorly documented British and Welsh holy men of the fifth to seventh centuries whose lives were rewritten in Norman and later hagiography to serve local churches. Cautious history can affirm that a cult of a saint named Congar or Cyngar was established at Congresbury and in parts of Wales, and that he was remembered as a monastic founder. Precise facts of parentage, travels, office, and death remain unknown.
